1,147 Possible Causes for Anemia, Leukopenia, Splenomegaly

  • Infectious Mononucleosis

Leukopenia and thrombocytopenia are not uncommon.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Clinical estimates of splenomegaly are fallible.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Infectious mononucleosis (IM) is a rare cause of aplastic anemia in adults.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria

CBC showed leukopenia (WBC 2.9 x 103 /µL) with neutropenia (segmented neutrophils 48%), macrocytic anemia (Hgb 6.1 g/dL, hematocrit 20%, MCV,113 fL) and thrombocytopenia ([ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] PNH is associated with abdominal vein thrombosis, which can cause splenomegaly and hypersplenism.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Anemia work-up revealed a misunderstood association of a hemolytic anemia with a negative direct antiglobulin test and iron deficiency.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Ehrlichiosis

I report a case of tick-borne ehrlichiosis in which the primary presentation suggested an infectious diarrhea, with impressive leukopenia and thrombocytopenia.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Splenomegaly, a characteristic feature of E. muris infection, was associated with an expanded and disorganized marginal zone and a nearly 66-fold increase in the level of[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] 5-year-old boy who was referred to the Hematology-Oncology Clinic to consider a bone marrow etiologic process after his pediatrician discovered progressive neutropenia, anemia[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Hypersplenism

Unfortunately, these patients may become intolerant to this therapy when it is complicated by hypersplenism with leukopenia and/or thrombocytopenia.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] While 38 patients displayed splenomegaly, 121 showed normal spleen volumes at 6 months after LDLT (LDLT).[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Although splenomegaly in children with sickle cell anemia is common, massive enlargement associated with thrombocytopenia and very severe anemia is rare.[jamanetwork.com]

  • Typhus

The most common CT finding was hepatomegaly (74.4%), followed by splenomegaly (66.7%).[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Some of the common abnormalities noted include proteinuria, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, higher levels of transaminase, and hypoalbuminemia.[symptoma.com] Physical and laboratory data showed cytopenia (thrombocytopenia and anemia), splenomegaly, hyperferritinemia, hypofibrinogenemia, and an elevated level of interleukin-2 receptor[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Myelodysplasia

Serum copper determination should be included in the work-up of patients with anemia and leukopenia of unclear etiology who have associated myeloneuropathy.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Therapy with granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) and granulocyte-monocyte-colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) caused splenomegaly and severe thrombocytopenia, which[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Who has aplastic anemia and MDS?[niddk.nih.gov]

  • Aggressive Systemic Mastocytosis

In fact, bone marrow failure is associated with cytopenias and patients suffering from anemia, leukopenia, or thrombocytopenia may present with pallor, weakness, and fatigue[symptoma.com] A 43 year-old woman presented with fever, abdominal pain, epato-splenomegaly, ascites, cholestasis, anemia, thrombocytopenia and previous diagnosis of sclerosing cholangitis[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] A rapidly progressive anemia and thrombocytopenia dictated a splenectomy.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Primary Myelofibrosis

We report a patient with very advanced myelofibrosis and huge splenomegaly who showed a complete hematological response to low dose thalidomide with reversal of splenomegaly[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] We found that fibrosis grade 2 and greater on a 0-3 scale was associated with clinical characteristics indicative of a more advanced disease, such as anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Most of them had anemia, fever, and hepatosplenomegaly on admission.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Malaria

Anemia, Leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia are commonly observed hematological abnormalities in malaria and typhoid patients.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] We report the case of a 12-year-old child who was admitted to our Department, with 7 days' history of high fever and splenomegaly.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] AL treatment of severe malaria can cause delayed hemolytic anemia.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Hairy Cell Leukemia

Later he developed leukopenia and pancytopenia. Bone marrow biopsies showed fibrosis.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Also these cytokines may play a role in the development of hairy cell leukemia.Key words: hairy cell leukemia -  sarcoidosis - massive splenomegaly.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Here, we describe a patient with HCL who initially presented with pancytopenia and received a diagnosis of aplastic anemia.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
