11 Possible Causes for Artefact - Patient Movement

  • Endometriosis

This reduces imaging time, movement artefacts, is more comfortable for the patient and is easier for workflow coordination.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] However, there appears to be equally diagnostic quality imaging obtainable with a 3 T system using fast imaging acquisition without any patient preparation.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Parkinson's Disease

A total of five scans showed severe artefact due to patient movement preventing the assessment of the presence of nigrosome-1.[doi.org] No cases were excluded from the analysis due to poor quality or movement artefact. 16 subjects (8 PD and 8 controls) were correctly classified by both raters independently[doi.org] We also excluded patients with structural brainstem pathology resulting in distortion of the substantia nigra (n   4).[doi.org]

  • Mesenteric Vein Thrombosis

In contrast to MRI, CT is usually faster in providing results with fewer artefacts due to patient movement and is available 24 h/day.[karger.com]

  • Minimally Conscious State

For each patient an artefact-free EEG stream was fragmented into consecutive 1-minute epochs. Further data processing was performed on each separate 1-minute epoch.[benthamopen.com] Epochs containing artifacts due to eye movement, eyes opening, significant muscle activity, and movements on EEG channels were marked and then automatically excluded from[benthamopen.com]

  • Dissociative Identity Disorder

The data of three actors and one patient were excluded due to huge movement artefacts and low signal quality.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] One patient had fallen asleep during the ANP and had switched several times during the EP run.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Neurodegeneration with Brain Iron Accumulation

It was possible to perform T2* in only 3 cases (patients 2, 3 and 4) due to interference from metallic dental devices present in 2 patients and movement artefacts in one patient[haematologica.org]

  • Nocturnal Frontal Lobe Epilepsy

artefact.[academic.oup.com] […] the cases: tachycardia (88 cases), sustained tachypnoea (40 cases) and irregular respiratory rhythm (37 cases) appeared synchronously with seizure onset or preceding the movement[academic.oup.com] We also recorded the photoplethysmogram in 13 patients: polysomnography recordings displayed abrupt flattening of the photoplethysmogram at the beginning of the seizure, sometimes[academic.oup.com]

  • Psilocybine

Excessive movement or other artefact meant that three patients were removed from the ASL analyses and four from the RSFC (SI Appendix), leaving sample sizes of 16 (mean age[nature.com] Results Nineteen patients with diagnoses of treatment resistant major depression completed pre-treatment and one-day post-treatment fMRI scanning.[nature.com]

  • Persistent Vegetative State

For each patient an artefact-free EEG stream was fragmented into consecutive 1-minute epochs. Further data processing was performed on each separate 1-minute epoch.[openneuroimagingjournal.com] Further two patients were acquired but had to be excluded from our analyses due to excessive movement artefacts and ocular contamination of the recordings, resulting in poorly[academic.oup.com] Epochs containing artifacts due to eye movement, eyes opening, significant muscle activity, and movements on EEG channels were marked and then automatically excluded from[openneuroimagingjournal.com]

  • Non-epileptic Convulsion

The movement of other persons around the patient (which usually cannot be completely avoided in the ICU) can generate artefacts, usually of capacitive or electrostatic origin[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
