222 Possible Causes for Blurred Vision, Night Blindness, Retinal Scar

  • Retinitis Pigmentosa

A 52-year-old man presented for blurred vision in his right eye. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 3/10 in his right eye and 7/10 in his left eye.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] The left eye of the same patient revealed typical PPRCA phenotype, with no night blindness, normal field, and normal ERG.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] A 63-year-old woman who had been diagnosed as having RP was referred to us because of sudden onset of blurred vision in her right eye.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Retinopathy

The scarring and bleeding can lead to retinal scarring or detachment from the back of the eye, resulting in vision loss. Why is retinopathy of prematurity a concern?[stanfordchildrens.org] A 57-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) complaining of blurred vision in both eyes was diagnosed with bilateral HCQ retinopathy and CMO based on characteristic[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] The short duration and rapid progression of symptoms along with the lack of family history of night blindness prompted a diagnosis of autoimmune retinopathy (AIR).[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Retinitis

Two patients were not treated (patients 1 and 8), one of whom (patient 8) had received an autologous transplant and was diagnosed with atrophic retinal scarring compatible[academic.oup.com] A second HIV negative patient presented with blurred vision and lid swelling and was found to have peripheral VZV retinitis confirmed by PCR.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] In young patients with the symptom of night blindness, it is important to differentiate retinitis pigmentosa from stationary night blindness.[ommbid.mhmedical.com]

  • Diabetic Retinopathy

This causes abnormal and very fragile blood vessels to grow on the surface of the retina which can lead to permanent loss of vision from bleeding into the eye, retinal scarring[moorfields.nhs.uk] However, bleeding can reoccur and cause severely blurred vision.[web.archive.org] A 39-year-old woman with typical retinitis pigmentosa (RP) for 9 years and a positive family history of night blindness was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus (DM).[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Glaucoma

So, the closer the damage is to fixation, the more likely I am to treat, even if the patient has myopic retinal scars in the fovea that could also account for the field loss[reviewofophthalmology.com] A 6-year-old girl presented with blurred vision and was found to have elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) and glaucomatous optic disc damage in both eyes.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] A later edition used the modern spelling night blindness (1930 — ). 12 Translation of another work by Guillemeau used the term ectropion (1900 — ). 13 Long after his training[oculistmd.wordpress.com]

  • Retinal Detachment

Abstract A 24-year-old healthy male presented with a chief complaint of blurred vision in the right eye for 1-week.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Night blindness followed by a loss of day vision are clinical signs common to most. There may also be an associated cataract formation.[medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com] The scarring that results seals the retina to the underlying tissue, helping to prevent a retinal detachment.[aao.org]

  • Macular Degeneration

These abnormal blood vessels eventually scar, leading to permanent retinal damage and loss of central vision.[my.clevelandclinic.org] Increasing amounts of these deposits can cause blurred vision, most noticeable when reading.[vmrinstitute.com] Night glare – this is sensitivity to bright lights at night.[news-medical.net]

An inactive retinal scar was observed in most cases (71.4%).[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Suddenly blurred vision, floater, and pain could be caused by Toxoplasma gondii. Flashing, may necessitate a more precise peripheral fundus examination.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] The most common complaint of the patient is that of night blindness, followed by peripheral visual field loss. The patient had the typical features of RP.[egyptretinaj.com]

  • Diabetes Mellitus

Spontaneous bleeding from the new and brittle blood vessels can lead to retinal scarring and retinal detachment, thus impairing vision.[medicinenet.com] High blood sugar can also cause blurred vision that is not related to diabetic retinopathy.[medlineplus.gov] These problems are known as diabetes complications, and include: Eye problems, including trouble seeing (especially at night), light sensitivity, and blindness Sores and infections[medlineplus.gov]
