1,662 Possible Causes for Cardiomegaly, Edema

  • Appendicitis

On arrival, chest X-ray showed prominent aortic arch without cardiomegaly. CT of the abdomen/pelvis showed aortic dissection in descending aorta without rupture.[] Massive ovarian edema is a benign clinical entity, the imaging findings of which can mimic an adnexal mass or ovarian torsion.[] Her abdomen was soft with minimal tenderness and no evidence of erythema or edema.[]

  • Acute Bronchitis

CXR shows pulmonary vascular congestion and may show cardiomegaly in CHF.[] An airway that is exposed to certain environmental agents, such as irritants or allergens, responds quickly to a cough and bronchospasm, followed by mucous production, edema[] Inflammation and edema of the respiratory epithelium may be reduced with inhaled corticosteroids.[]

  • Chagas Disease

A chest radiograph showed cardiomegaly. Cardiac catheterization showed no evidence of coronary artery disease.[] Cranial magnetic resonance imaging revealed a right temporoparietal mass lesion with surrounding edema.[] Clinicians should give due attention to such signs as uni- or bilateral palpebral edema, cardiac failure, myocarditis, pericarditis, anasarca and atypical signs of nephrotic[]

  • Peripartum Cardiomyopathy

Postpartum investigations revealed pathological cardiomegaly with left ventricular failure (NYHAIV). Cardiac biopsy diagnosed postpartum dilatative cardiomyopathy.[] A 22-year-old woman in the 26th week of gestation was admitted with acute pulmonary edema.[] Chest plain film showed acute pulmonary edema, bilateral pulmonary infiltration with interstitial patches, and cardiomegaly.[]

  • Myxedema

Cardiomegaly is common, and is thought to be due to either pericardial effusion or underlying heart disease and not to ventricular dilation induced by hypothyroidism.[] It can also be thought as nonpitting edema, in contrast to pitting edema .[] If cardiomegaly is present, an echocardiogram should be obtained to rule out a pericardial effusion.[]

  • Congestive Heart Failure

Autopsy showed mild cardiomegaly with microscopic foci of myocardial fibrosis and extensive contraction band necrosis.[] Peripheral edema: Edema develops in the feet in ambulatory patients and sacral edema in bed bound patients.[] After 2 months of CHM treatment, the follow-up chest X-ray showed great improvements in pulmonary edema and cardiomegaly.[]

  • Alcoholic Cardiomyopathy

Key features of alcoholic cardiomyopathy are cardiac hypertrophy and ventricular dilatation, and the disease is manifested mainly as cardiomegaly, congestive heart failure[] We describe a patient with pancytopenia, jaundice, and diffuse edema after a distal splenorenal shunt. His shunt was angiographically proved patent.[] Alcoholic cardiomyopathy is characterized by cardiomegaly, disruptions of myofibrillary architecture, reduced myocardial contractility, decreased ejection fraction, and enhanced[]

  • Dilated Cardiomyopathy

Chest radiograph showed cardiomegaly; electrocardiogram showed left ventricular hypertrophy and echocardiography revealed dilated cardiomyopathy.[] We report a case of 14-year-old girl who presented with dyspnea, bipedal edema, loss of weight, and easy fatigability for three months.[] Cardiomegaly with marked biventricular dilation and fibrosis were noticeable histopathological findings.[]

  • Restrictive Cardiomyopathy

Chest radiograph showed cardiomegaly. Two- dimensional echocardiography showed marked biatrial enlargement.[] A 75-year-old man was admitted for evaluation of marked edema and jaundice. Serum total bilirubin was elevated above 20 mg/dl.[] Cardiomegaly, defined by a cardiothoracic ratio 55%, was the predominant abnormality on chest radiography and was noted in 69 patients (73%).[]

  • Rheumatic Heart Disease

Plain radiograph pericardial calcification pulmonary oedema pulmonary ossification : due to mitral valve disease 4 cardiomegaly global cardiomegaly from a dilated cardiomyopathy[] We report a case of a young female who developed flash pulmonary edema during parturition and was found to have abnormal rheumatic involvement of her aortic, mitral, and tricuspid[] Oral prednisone is useful in patients with severe form of carditis, characterized by cardiomegaly and congestive heart failure.[]
