41 Possible Causes for Cognitive Defect, Prominent Sulci

  • Alcohol Dementia

The CT showed prominent sulci and gyri with deep white matter changes. There were no other abnormalities.[gponline.com]

  • Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus

NPH is suggested when ventricular dilation is out of proportion to the prominence of the sulci, but this is a subjective call.[docneuro.com]

  • Obstructive Hydrocephalus

Pre-contrast axial CT Sulci and gyri are very prominent due to cortical atrophy, unlike in obstructive hydrocephalus where there is effacement of sulci and gyri.[stritch.luc.edu] In addition to the acute symptomatology, hydrocephalus might also cause chronic symptoms, such as behavioral and cognitive changes, delayed puberty, and defects of higher[symptoma.com] Signs and symptoms of hydrocephalus include emesis (especially in the morning), decline in cognitive ability, headaches, papilledema, ataxia and defect in upward gaze.[stritch.luc.edu]

  • Hypertensive Encephalopathy

There was complete resolution of cerebral edema in all patients and mild interval prominence of the cerebral sulci, which can indicate cerebral volume loss, in three out of[bloodjournal.org]

  • Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease

B, Corresponding FLAIR image shows marked prominence of ventricles and sulci for the patient’s age.[ajnr.org] For sCJDMV1 patients, ataxia rather than cognitive decline as well as sensory defect may be more common at onset.[doi.org] Cognitive impairment, ataxia, myoclonus and pyramidal signs become very common in more advanced stages of the disease.[doi.org]

  • Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis

They can range from hyperintensities in the parietal and occipital region, brain stem lesions, and marked atrophy, causing prominence of sulci.[cureus.com] This is caused by persistent defective measles virus infection.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] The initial symptoms of SSPE usually involve regression in cognitive functioning and behavior or recurrent myoclonic jerks.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Meningovascular Syphilis

Holland et al reported the CT scan findings in 3 patients with meningovascular syphilis. [2] Less prominence of the cortical sulci in our first case suggested cortical atrophy[ijdvl.com]

  • Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis

CT head showed prominent sulci suggestive of cerebral atrophy.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • West Nile Encephalitis

Arrows indicate subtle enhancement in the sulci. B and C, FLAIR images show increased signal intensity in the sulci, more prominent on the left than on the right.[ajnr.org]

  • Leptomeningeal Metastasis

The lesions were more prominent in the cerebellar sulci compared with in the cerebral sulci.[ajnr.org] Confusion, memory disturbances and variable cognitive defects may also be evident.[jgo.amegroups.com] This revealed leptomeningeal metastases with contrast enhancement, more prominent in the cerebellar sulci, and changes consistent with acute hydrocephalus, which likely accounted[ajnr.org]
