1,113 Possible Causes for Dilated Bowel

  • Small Bowel Obstruction

The abdominal examination was suggestive of bowel obstruction. A CT showed dilated bowel loops with complete cut-off at the level of the terminal ileum.[] Dilatation 3cm of the small bowel is considered abnormal, however the longer the segment of bowel that is dilated, the more likely bowel dilatation represents a genuine obstruction[] High pitched bowel sounds X-ray: dilated bowel, air-fluid levels, “stack of coins” or “string of pearls” sign Modality of choice: CT NGT, surgery Podcast Ep 1: The Rosh Review[]

  • Recurrent Small Bowel Obstruction

Bowel sounds were normal. Plain abdominal film did not show free air or dilated bowel loops.[] Ultrasound Bedside test help to diagnose small bowel obstruction, findings suggestive of small bowel obstruction 7 : dilated bowel loop (diameter 2.5 cm) ineffective peristalsis[] Dilatation of small bowel loops was demonstrated on abdominal computed tomography.[]

  • Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction

The appearance of polyhydramnios and dilated bowel loops on prenatal sonographic examination usually implies mechanical obstruction.[] A colostomy was performed for decompression of the dilated bowel and a biopsy of the lymph node surrounding the splenic flexure was taken.[] The radiological findings commonly include paralytic ileus or signs of apparent clinical obstruction with dilated loops of bowel.[]

  • Colonic Pseudo-Obstruction

Bowel function was thereafter restored. The method may be a therapeutic option for acute colonic pseudo-obstruction in selected cases.[] Since computed tomography (CT) often reveals a sharp transition or "cut-off" between dilated and non-dilated bowel, the possibility of organic colonic obstruction must be[] Abdominal x-ray demonstrated dilated bowel with air throughout the colon.[]

  • Large Bowel Obstruction

Key radiological features are dilated bowel loops that are peripheral, contain haustra and contain faeces.[] Barium radiograph demonstrates a typical "apple-core" lesion (arrows) caused by adenocarcinoma of the small bowel, producing a partial obstruction with dilated proximal bowel[] Plain abdominal x-ray showed grossly dilated large bowel up to the sigmoid colon with no gas in the rectum.[]

  • Intestinal Obstruction

Imaging showed dilated bowel loops confined to the centre of the peritoneal cavity. Intraoperatively it was seen to be a case of peritoneal encapsulation.[] Dilated loops of small bowel are visible (arrows). Enlarge Print Figure 3.[] Dilatation 3cm of the small bowel is considered abnormal, however the longer the segment of bowel that is dilated, the more likely bowel dilatation represents a genuine obstruction[]

  • Ileus

Plain x-rays If positive, tests for cystic fibrosis Prenatal ultrasonography can detect changes in utero suggestive of cystic fibrosis and meconium ileus (eg, dilated bowel[] Sonographic characteristics of DIOS are hyperbolic, intra-abdominal mass of inspissated meconium, non-visualization of the gallbladder, and dilated bowel.[] Arrow: Area of obstruction Gall stone Ileus Air in Bile duct Dilated small bowel Gall stone is not seen in this film and may overlie the sacrum where the dilated bowel seems[]

  • Gallstone Ileus

The ultrasonography of abdomen revealed a decrease in bowel motion, and dilated bowel segments.[] Abdominal X-ray demonstrated large bowel dilation.[] A CBD stent was inserted at ERCP however a few days later the patient developed symptoms of bowel obstruction, and dilated small bowel was visible on an abdominal radiograph[]

  • Bowel Stricture

The proximal bowel was dilated and the distal bowel collapsed ( Figure 3 ).[] The proximal bowel loop & few other loops were also seen dilated.[] Secondary endpoints were prolonged success after week 24 (still on adalimumab, without dilation nor surgery) and time to bowel resection in the whole cohort.[]

  • Short Bowel Syndrome

Whether small bowel dilation in short bowel syndrome could influence the risk of liver injury through increased bacterial translocation remains unknown.[] bowel.[] OBJECTIVE: To analyze risk factors and prognostic significance of small bowel (SB) dilatation in children with short bowel syndrome (SBS).[]
