13 Possible Causes for Dyspnea, Impaired Exercise Tolerance, Increased Area of Cardiac Dullness

  • Congestive Heart Failure

The impairment of exercise tolerance indicated by NYHA classification was markedly improved by PD for both groups.[] Features due to left heart failure: Dyspnea, orthopnea and paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea: These symptoms develop due to congestion of the lungs.[] Numerous mechanisms unrelated to hemodynamic dysfunction may underlie impaired exercise tolerance in patients with chronic heart failure.[]

  • Cardiomyopathy

Symptoms: Patients with cardiomyopathy will typically present with dyspnea, orthopnea, paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea, bilateral edema, and fatigue.[] However, after 10 infusions the patient developed dyspnea, edema of the legs, ascites and a weight gain of 10 kg because of a decompensated heart insufficiency with a reduced[] We report the case of a 76-year-old man with a dual chamber pacemaker, admitted for acute chest pain and dyspnea and final diagnosis of TC.[]

  • Aortic Valve Stenosis

A 74-year-old woman with severe aortic valve stenosis (AS) was admitted to our hospital because of dyspnea on exertion.[] Other symptoms associated with AS are related to cardiac failure, such as paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea, orthopnea, and dyspnea on exertion.[] Two years after the initial surgery the patient developed progressive dyspnea.[]

  • Heart Disease

Valvular heart diseases present with complaints such as dyspnea, leg swelling, cough, fever, dizziness and chest pain.[] The symptoms of heart disease range from dyspnea, chest pain and syncope to symptoms of cardiac shock like cold extremities, hypotension, confusion, and multiple organ failure[]

  • Peripartum Cardiomyopathy

[…] analyzed 262 peripartum patients with dyspnea, and summed up the final diagnosis.[] […] or comorbid paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea and orthopnea are present, even in patients with preeclampsia.[] A 22-year old woman visited the LAMB Hospital, Parbatipur, Dinajpur, Bangladesh, in February 2010, with exertional dyspnea for three weeks.[]

  • Dilated Cardiomyopathy

We describe a case of a 35-year-old man presented at the emergency room of our institution with acute onset of dyspnea and dizziness.[] We report a case of 14-year-old girl who presented with dyspnea, bipedal edema, loss of weight, and easy fatigability for three months.[] A 64-year-old women was admitted due to dyspnea on effort and lower extremity edema.[]

  • Ischemic Cardiomyopathy

The cardinal manifestations of HF are dyspnea and fatigue, which may limit exercise tolerance, and fluid retention, which may lead to pulmonary congestion and peripheral edema[] The primary end point was change in angina as assessed by the Seattle Angina Questionnaire (SAQ), or in dyspnea as assessed by the Rose Dyspnea Scale (RDS).[] Pulmonary congestion reduces when the patient is in erect position, it results in improvement in symptoms. • Pericardial Effusion

Considerable amounts of pericardial fluid may muffle heart sounds, increase the area of cardiac dullness, and change the size and shape of the cardiac silhouette.[] Dyspnea and reduced exercise tolerance will be early signs, progressing to severe impaired cardiac output and death in severe cases (e.g. cardiac tamponade ).[] However, she began to experience dyspnea on exertion leading to admission.[]

  • Alcoholic Cardiomyopathy

A majority will experience dyspnea on exertion. As ACM progresses, patients can develop orthopnea.[] These symptoms can include the following: Ankle, feet, and leg swelling (edema) Overall swelling Loss of appetite Shortness of breath (dyspnea), especially with activity Breathing[] This disease is usually manifested by dyspnea and palpitations with cardiomegaly and congestive heart failure (heart failure) ICD-9-CM Volume 2 Index entries containing back-references[]

  • Malignant Pericardial Effusion

Six patients had exertional dyspnea and 13 had dyspnea at rest; three needed emergency pericardiocentesis.[] Dyspnea and reduced exercise tolerance will be early signs, progressing to severe impaired cardiac output and death in severe cases (e.g. cardiac tamponade ).[] The only common clinical feature shared by the patients was dyspnea.[]
