11 Possible Causes for Early Repolarization, Myoclonic Jerking, Ventricular Fibrillation

  • Cocaine Abuse

Cocaine has been found to trigger chaotic heart rhythms, called ventricular fibrillation; accelerate heartbeat and breathing; and increase blood pressure and body temperature[ehd.org] Those rhythms may be ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation and may cause sudden death.[emedicinehealth.com]

  • Torsades De Pointes

The following day, nursing staff observed repetitive, short-lived episodes of generalized mild myoclonic jerks. The patient remained conscious during these episodes.[consultant360.com] Therefore, in this context long or short QT syndrome, Brugada syndrome or early repolarization syndrome were unlikely. 6 Analysis of periods of torsade de pointes in our patient[revportcardiol.org] Sumatriptan manufacturer-provided drug information states that life threatening arrhythmias, including ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation (VF), have been[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Sudden Cardiac Death

The following points need to be considered: Prompt recognition and diagnosis (brief seizure-like activity or involuntary myoclonic jerks have been reported in approximately[cry.ie] Patients having major clinical events showed more frequent Brugada type patterns, early repolarization, and more diffuse multivessel coronary vasospasms.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) are effective in patients with structural heart disease and ventricular fibrillation.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Sick Sinus Syndrome

Syncope may be accompanied by myoclonic jerks (convulsive syncope), but postictal confusion is absent.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] The simultaneous occurrence of V596M and R16472H may increase the severity of early repolarization.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Multifocal premature ventricular contractions followed by ventricular fibrillation were documented.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Syncope

jerking is common in syncope.[emed.ie] Why is ‘Benign’ early repolarization not a benign condition in patients with syncope? Which children with syncope should be admitted? and many more….[emergencymedicinecases.com] Ventricular fibrillation (VF) is the most common arrhythmia leading to sudden cardiac death, but in rare cases VF can manifest as a syncope, provided that it will self-terminate[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • SHORT Syndrome

Myoclonic seizures (brief shock-like jerks of a muscle or group of muscles) appear between 1 and 5 years in 85% of children with Dravet syndrome.[epilepsy.com] High prevalence of early repolarization in short QT syndrome. • Hypertrichotic Osteochondrodysplasia

jerks.[genomeweb.com] Examples of J-wave disorders are arrhythmias associated with an early repolarization pattern in the inferior or mid to lateral precordial leads, Brugada syndrome, some cases[genecards.org] KCNJ8 sequence variations are traditionally associated with J-wave syndromes, involving ventricular fibrillation and sudden cardiac death.[pubfacts.com]

  • Carotid Sinus Syncope

Patients in whom the cardiac arrest had lasted 14 seconds had 1 or 2 generalized myoclonic jerks.[ajnr.org] In patients with syncope, the clinical significance of the early repolarization pattern is unknown. Recommendations for Early Repolarization Pattern 5.[ahajournals.org] It has also been reported to precipitate ventricular fibrillation.[patient.info]

  • Familial Progressive Cardiac Conduction Defect Type 2

Seizures began at 21/2 years with arm stiffness, then clusters of right-sided facial twitching and weakness, then staring spells, eye twitching, and myoclonic jerks.[bcmj.org] Long-term outcome associated with early repolarization on electrocardiography.
