23 Possible Causes for Edema, Increased Area of Cardiac Dullness, Pleural Effusion on Chest X-Ray

  • Congestive Heart Failure

The daily dosage was adjusted on the basis of the patient's clinical response and her follow-up chest x-ray studies.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Peripheral edema: Edema develops in the feet in ambulatory patients and sacral edema in bed bound patients.[symptoma.com] Testing may include a chest x-ray to look for cardiomegaly (an enlarged heart), pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs), or pleural effusion (collection of fluid around the lungs[dx.doi.org]

  • Cardiomyopathy

In patients with congestive heart failure, chest x-ray will show signs of congestion, an enlarged cardiac silhouette and possibly pleural effusions ( Figure 3 ).[clinicaladvisor.com] DIAGNOSIS: The chest x-ray revealed pulmonary edema.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old woman presented with frank pulmonary edema and received a diagnosis of noncompaction cardiomyopathy.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Pericardial Effusion

Radiologic examinations were carried out, and the computed tomography scan revealed a hepatomegaly and a chest X-ray showed evidence of a unilateral pleural effusion.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Fluid retention may be present as edema, weight gain, or third place fluid collection. Pericardial effusion is rarely seen with docetaxel treatment.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Considerable amounts of pericardial fluid may muffle heart sounds, increase the area of cardiac dullness, and change the size and shape of the cardiac silhouette.[merckmanuals.com]

  • Dilated Cardiomyopathy

Generalized enlargement of the heart is seen upon normal chest X-ray. Pleural effusion may also be noticed, which is due to pulmonary venous hypertension.[en.wikipedia.org] Other findings which are of importance include: cyanosis, clubbing, jugular venous distension, pulmonary edema, S 3 gallop, enlarged liver and peripheral edema.[symptoma.com] Chest x-ray shows cardiomegaly, usually of all chambers.[merckmanuals.com]

  • Suppurative Pericarditis

Initial chest X-ray showed cardiomegaly, bibasilar and retrocardiac parenchymal opacities, without signs of pulmonary congestion or pleural effusion (Figure 1).[revistas.unal.edu.co] Manifestations of cardiogenic pulmonary edema may also be present.[radiopaedia.org] Patients with large pericardial effusions have an area of increased dullness at the base of the heart in addition to generalized enlargement of the area of cardiac dullness[tele.med.ru]

  • Alcoholic Cardiomyopathy

Blood tests will show signs of liver injury and confirm alcohol abuse, while chest X-ray shows pulmonary congestion, cardiomegaly and pleural effusions.[radcliffecardiology.com] We describe a patient with pancytopenia, jaundice, and diffuse edema after a distal splenorenal shunt. His shunt was angiographically proved patent.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Also observed were interstitial edema, an enlarged cardiomyocyte-capillary space, thinning of the capillary walls, flattening of the endothelium and a plethora and aggregation[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Acute Mediastinitis

By plain chest X-ray films, mediastinal emphysema and pleural effusion were detected in 62.5% and 75%, respectively.[jstage.jst.go.jp] This effect causes superior vena cava syndrome or pulmonary edema, as well as obstruction or compression of the central airways, esophagus, pulmonary veins or arteries and[ic.steadyhealth.com] […] computed tomography is the presence of fluid collections and gas in the mediastinal space, which might or might not be associated with peristernal abnormalities such as edema[rb.org.br]

  • Peripartum Cardiomyopathy

Chest X-ray showed pulmonary interstitial edema, an increase in the cardiac silhouette and bilateral pleural effusion.[signavitae.com] This report describes the presentation and anesthetic management of a parturient who was admitted with a diagnosis of severe preeclampsia in whom pulmonary edema and heart[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Chest X-ray can show cardiomegaly, pulmonary congestion, and pleural effusion.[kjim.org]

  • Mediastinal Abscess

The chest x-ray showed a widened upper mediastinum with left pleural effusion.[ispub.com] All clinicians evaluating a "sore throat" should consider neck edema or gas on neck radiograms as evidence of cervical abscess, and subsequent widening of the mediastinum[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Negative pressure promotes removal of exudates and reduction of edema, allowing enhancement of granulation tissue formation and increase tissue perfusion.[e-sciencecentral.org]

  • Mallory-Weiss Syndrome

On examination at admission, generalized pitting edema and albuminuria were found.[kjim.org]
