446 Possible Causes for Empyema, Fever, Pneumothorax

  • Staphylococcal Pneumonia

There were seven deaths, five in patients with empyema and two in patients without this complication.[] The delayed and subacute/chronic nature of the tension pneumothorax is unusual.[] Fever and signs of pleural effusion and respiratory distress were common in primary disease while fever and a toxic appearance were frequent with disseminated illness.[]

  • Lung Abscess

[…] with pleural empyema.[] We present a case of acute empyema with intractable pneumothorax associated with ruptured lung abscess caused by Mycobacterium avium in an immunocompromised patient.[] A 59 year old man presented to our hospital with a 1 month history of cough and low grade fever progressing to high grade fever for 1 week.[]

  • Pulmonary Tuberculosis

The patient developed a large left-sided iatrogenic pneumothorax, which recurred and failed to resolve despite the successful insertion of both Seldinger and surgical chest[] Additional targeted therapies may be necessary in the setting of empyema, mediastinal complications or hemoptysis.[] Post-operative fever is common following emergency surgery.[]

  • Streptococcus Pyogenes Pneumonia

Management Management of empyemas is a controversial area.[] Dead 7 h after hospitalization Weinblatt et al [ 20 ] 2009 54, female Rheumatoid arthritis 1 week 110/70 mm Hg, 110 bpm, 38.9 C CTRX CLDM VCM Acute respiratory failure, pneumothorax[] Pyogenes (Diseases non Toxin) 1) Impetigo 2) Pharyngitis 3) cellulitis erysipelas 4) Rheumatic fever 5) Glomerulonephritis S.[]

  • Esophageal Perforation

Esophageal stenting and drainage of empyema were unsuccessful.[] Chest radiography and computed tomography (CT) revealed a massive left pleural effusion and left tension pneumothorax.[] On physical examination, general weakness, chest pain, odynophagia, and a fever up to 38.9 C were found.[]

  • Bronchiectasis

Complications of Bronchiectasis: Recurrent pneumonia Haemoptysis Brain abscess Empyema Pyopneumothorax Pulmonary insufficiency Cor-pulmonale Amyloidosis Management and treatment[] Surgery is indicated in unsuccessful medical treatment and complications of bronchiectasis e.g. haemoptysis, lung abscess, lung masses and pneumothorax.[] A 21-year-old woman presented to our hospital with a 9-day history of productive cough and fever. Bronchiectasis after Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia.[]

  • Pyopneumothorax

Five patients developed pleural empyema due to Clostridium perfringens in the absence of penetration of the thorax; two of the patients presented with pyopneumothorax.[] Tension pneumothorax following esophageal rupture is very rare.[] Patients may present with pleuritic chest pain, severe cough and dyspnea, whilst also manifesting certain nonspecific symptoms such as fever, loss of appetite, loss of weight[]

  • Pulmonary Histoplasmosis

The authors report a case of Citrobacter freundii empyema in a patient with occult pulmonary histoplasmosis.[] The patient responded well to amphotericin B with subsidence of fever.[] We report a case of a 41-year-old man presenting with persisting fevers over 2 weeks. The patient had spent 4 weeks in Central America.[]

  • Chronic Pulmonary Coccidioidomycosis

[…] coccidioidomycosis includes clinical entities as severe and persistent pneumonia, progressive primary coccidioidomycosis, fibrocavitary coccidioidomycosis, cavities, and empyema[] An air-fluid level in the pleural space is a clue that the process is not a spontaneous pneumothorax. In the past, these cavities often were surgically resected.[] It can cause fever, chest pain and coughing, among other signs and symptoms. Two species of coccidioides fungi cause valley fever.[]

  • Pleurisy

Conclusions We describe 3 rare cases of mediastinal teratoma misdiagnosed as tuberculosis or empyema.[] A lung disease or acute lung injury can cause a pneumothorax. Some lung procedures also can cause a pneumothorax.[] The onset of pleurisy was accompanied by acute fever.[]
