4,669 Possible Causes for Fever, Headache, Leukopenia, Thrombocytopenia

  • Infectious Mononucleosis

A 49-year-old man with diabetic mellitus suffered from IM with fever, pharyngitis, parotiditis with lymphadenopathies, thrombocytopenia and splenomegaly.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Common symptoms include: fever swollen lymph glands in the neck, armpits and groin extreme fatigue sore throat, which can make swallowing difficult swollen spleen or liver headache[childrenshospital.org] Leukopenia and thrombocytopenia are not uncommon.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] You don't usually get glandular fever more than once.[nhs.uk]

  • Influenza

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an isolated autoimmune condition, often preceded by a viral infection.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Some antiviral drugs may be used if needed along with painkillers to relieve headaches and muscle pain.[symptoma.com] Each of these viruses is capable of causing nonspecific febrile illnesses, classic dengue fever and dengue haemorrhagic fever (Gubler 1998).[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] We report herein the case of an unexpected platelet increase in a 46-year-old woman with idiopathic thrombocytopenia (ITP) treated with oseltamivir for influenza.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Ehrlichiosis

[…] year-old boy who was referred to the Hematology-Oncology Clinic to consider a bone marrow etiologic process after his pediatrician discovered progressive neutropenia, anemia, thrombocytopenia[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] […] year old patient was admitted to hospital due to high fever of over 40 degrees C that lasted two days, accompanied with chills, muscle aches, malaise, loss of appetite, headache[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] I report a case of tick-borne ehrlichiosis in which the primary presentation suggested an infectious diarrhea, with impressive leukopenia and thrombocytopenia.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] She presented with a several-day history of myalgias, fever, and frontal headache.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Malaria

[…] describ the case of a young soldier who, after returning from Central Africa, presented a fever associated with petechial purpura and gingivorrhagia, hemogram showed deep thrombocytopenia[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] She presented with fever and headache. Thick smear from blood revealed trophozoites of P. falciparum at parasite density of 52,300 parasites/μl.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Anemia, Leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia are commonly observed hematological abnormalities in malaria and typhoid patients.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Fever was not reported with this patient.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Plasmodium Falciparum Malaria

Statistics from Altmetric.com Plasmodium falciparum malaria thrombocytopenia traveller Thrombocytopenia is frequent in patients with acute malaria and is sometimes profound[adc.bmj.com] Typical malaria symptoms include fever, chills, fatigue, headache, nausea, and vomiting. In severe cases, it can cause jaundice, seizures, coma, or death.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Fever (100%), splenomegaly (86.7%), hepatomegaly (26.7%), leukopenia (13.3%), thrombocytopenia (80%), elevated liver function tests (40%), and increased serum creatinine levels[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Thus, Q fever may be associated with malaria infection in travelers returning from disease-endemic countries.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria

The combination of thrombosis, splenomegaly, and thrombocytopenia (TST) is challenging because anticoagulants are indicated but thrombocytopenia may increase the bleeding[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Our case is a 44-year-old woman who presented with a 2 day history of headaches, nausea, and seizures followed by a Todd s paresis; she had been diagnosed as paroxysmal nocturnal[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] CBC showed leukopenia (WBC 2.9 x 103 /µL) with neutropenia (segmented neutrophils 48%), macrocytic anemia (Hgb 6.1 g/dL, hematocrit 20%, MCV,113 fL) and thrombocytopenia ([ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Thromboses, as observed in our case, may be associated with fever and marked inflammation.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Blood platelet counts (BPCs) of 20   10/L represent severe thrombocytopenia, and a BPC of 21 to 50   10/L indicates moderate thrombocytopenia.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] The headache recurred with findings of cerebellar ataxia and obstructive hydrocephalus.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Drugs causing leukopenia Some drugs may lead to leukopenia.[news-medical.net] This FDG distribution pattern should be kept in mind when PET is performed for etiological investigation of fever of unknown origin.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Aplastic Anemia

After the initial appearance of AMI approximately 2 months earlier, he had received conservative treatment/transfusion alone because of severe thrombocytopenia and anemia[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Symptoms of chronic aplastic anemia include weakness and fatigue in the early stages, followed by shortness of breath, headache, fever, and pounding heart.[britannica.com] The regimen has a low incidence of bone marrow suppression, and the incidences of anemia, leukopenia, neutropenia and thrombocytopenia exceeding grade 3 are less than 5%.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Anti-malarial treatment was initiated following which the fever subsided but, despite regular transfusions, the blood counts remained low.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

This child had no serious bleeding manifestations and minimal hemorrhagic skin manifestations despite severe RMSF, concurrent thrombocytopenia, as well as the coagulation[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] The classic triad of headache, fever, and a rash that begins on the extremities and travels proximally to involve the trunk is found in a majority of patients.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Mediterranean spotted fever are rickettsial infections primarily of endothelial cells that normally have a potent anticoagulant function.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] The combination of fever, headache, myalgias, marked left shift in the differential white blood cell count, severe thrombocytopenia, and hyponatremia all help to suggest the[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis

Cases with LCMV seroconversions were statistically younger, had milder acute kidney injury and more severe thrombocytopenia than patients without LCMV.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] On April 20, 2015, a female aged 15 years sought care at her pediatrician's office after 5 days of fever, myalgia, left parietal headache, and photophobia.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] , light-headedness, and sore throat Symptoms usually improve within 5 days to 3 weeks Patients may suffer relapse with meningeal symptoms Suspect in patients with marked leukopenia[arupconsult.com] […] viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) in non-human primates and in human beings.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
