2 Possible Causes for Few Fungiform Papillae

  • Lingual Papillitis

It is seen more in young women as a painful enlargement of one or more fungiform papillae that resolve quickly within a day or several days.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Transient lingual papillitis is a benign condition characterized by the inflammation of one or more fungiform papillae on the dorsolateral tongue.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] It describes a condition of the tongue that is relatively common but with few documented cases.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Bowenoid Papulosis

The lesion appeared to represent altered filiform papillae, more so than fungiform papillae.[science.gov] All were composed of dense, avascular fibrous tissue with no or very few inflammatory cells; one showed focal mild neovascularity and edema.[science.gov]
