11 Possible Causes for Focal Ballooning of Hepatocytes

  • Hepatitis

Liver biopsy normally shows ballooning degeneration, focal hepatocyte necrosis, and neutrophilic infiltration[ 4, 20 ].[doi.org]

  • Liver Failure

There were extensive oncocytic changes in the hepatocytes, as well as focal macrovesicular steatosis and focal ballooning of their cytoplasm.[omim.org] During the acute phase, liver biopsy of 2 patients showed minimal chronic inflammation and mild focal proliferation of bile ductules, with variable portal and sinusoidal fibrosis[omim.org]

  • Hepatic Sarcoidosis

The hepatic parenchyma showed focal ballooning of hepatocytes and patchy lobular inflammation with spotty necrosis.[tropicalgastro.com]

  • Massive Hepatic Necrosis

Occasional tufts are seen (arrow), indicating focal ballooning sufficient for a diagnosis of steatohepatitis. C.[librepathology.org] […] only Large droplet steatosis (% of hepatocytes): Present, moderate 60% Ballooning of hepatocytes: Present, rare Mallory-Denk bodies: Present, rare Portal inflammation: Present[librepathology.org] Glycogenated nuclei (black arrows) and hepatocytes with feathery degeneration (red arrows) are seen. D. Very rare foci of spotty necrosis were seen. E.[librepathology.org]

  • Hepatitis G

The hepatic lobules showed moderate inflammatory infiltrate, similar to the one noticed in the portal spaces, ballooning degeneration of the hepatocytes ( Fig. 2 ) and isolated[scielo.mec.pt] There were also focal lesions of interface hepatitis ( Fig. 1 ).[scielo.mec.pt] It was observed focal hepatic necrosis with collapse of the parenchyma, more severe in the perivenular zone, along with discrete fibrosis.[scielo.mec.pt]

  • Phosphorylase Kinase Deficiency

A repeat biopsy was performed, and again diffuse ballooning of the hepatocytes with glycogen and portal to portal fibrosis were noted.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Focal regenerative nodules were present, and enzymatic studies were inconclusive.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Chronic Persistent Hepatitis

Liver biopsy normally shows ballooning degeneration, focal hepatocyte necrosis, and neutrophilic infiltration[ 4, 20 ].[doi.org]

  • Chronic Hepatitis

Several forms of hepatocyte injury can be seen under light microscopy, including ballooning degeneration (severe swelling), focal necrosis, and acidophil bodies (apoptosis[emedicine.medscape.com] Liver biopsy normally shows ballooning degeneration, focal hepatocyte necrosis, and neutrophilic infiltration[ 4, 20 ].[doi.org] The distribution of hepatocyte injury can be multifocal or panacinar. Severe cases may have confluent hepatocellular necrosis, predominantly in the centrilobular region.[emedicine.medscape.com]

  • Indian Childhood Cirrhosis

[…] and then extends towards the terminal hepatic venules Earliest changes : Ballooning degeneration and focal necrosis Formation of Mallory–Denk bodies N eutrophilic satellitosis[histopathology.guru] – Reversal by penicillamine therapy Morphology Copper storage is directly responsible for the histopathological lesions in ICC The copper accumulates first in periportal hepatocytes[histopathology.guru]

  • Aagenaes Syndrome

Focal pericellular fibrosis was observed around some of the periportal hepatocytes.[journals.lww.com] The hepatocytes showed diffuse hydropic and ballooning degeneration. There was minimal number of multinucleated cells.[journals.lww.com]
