115 Possible Causes for Hemolysis, Occasional Back Pain

  • Streptococcal Infection

Introduction Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is a gram-positive bacterium that grows in pairs or chains and causes complete, or β-hemolysis when cultured on sheep blood agar.[pedsinreview.aappublications.org] Symptoms include: painful throat, especially when swallowing dry scratchy throat redness in the back of the mouth bad breath mild cough swollen neck glands The symptoms are[nhs.uk] Beta -hemolysis is associated with complete lysis of red cells surrounding the colony, whereas alpha-hemolysis is a partial or "green" hemolysis associated with reduction[textbookofbacteriology.net]

  • Diclofenac

One of the two patients developed severe hemolysis and significant thrombocytopenic purpura. The other patient developed significant thrombocytopenia but no hemolysis.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Diclofenac treatment was discontinued and occasional use of acetaminophen for the back pain was recommended.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] The encapsulation of sodium diclofenac was performed by an osmosis based process - gradual hemolysis.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Hemolytic Anemia

Hemolysis occurring in hematologic diseases is often associated with an iron loading anemia.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Dark urine and, occasionally, back pain may be reported by patients with intravascular hemolysis. The skin may appear jaundiced or pale.[aafp.org] Hemolysis related to a kinked prosthetic graft or inner felt strip is a very rare complication after aortic surgery.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Liver Hematoma

This entity has usually been associated with severe preeclampsia or the HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets) syndrome.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] […] symptomatic to include RUQ soreness and R shoulder/back pain occasionally but not persistent.[forums.studentdoctor.net] Subcapsular liver hematoma is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of preeclampsia and hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets syndrome.[uthealth.influuent.utsystem.edu]

  • Subcapsular Liver Hematoma

HELLP syndrome (hemolysis, elevation of liver enzymes, and low platelet count) occurs during pregnancy.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] […] symptomatic to include RUQ soreness and R shoulder/back pain occasionally but not persistent.[forums.studentdoctor.net] HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes and low platelets) syndrome is an obstetric complication with heterogeneous presentation, multisystem involvement and variable prognosis[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia

Laboratory investigations were suggestive of intravascular hemolysis, and on immuno-hematological evaluation it was diagnosed that the patient had autoantibody with mimicking[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Dark urine and, occasionally, back pain may be reported by patients with intravascular hemolysis. The skin may appear jaundiced or pale.[aafp.org] All patients had resolution or marked improvement of hemolysis after discontinuation of maintenance of CNI and initiation of sirolimus immunosuppression.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria

Here we have tested our eculizumab-treated PNH patients (n 12) for signs of hemolysis and assessed complement biomarkers.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Symptoms and Diagnosis of Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria Hemolysis in PNH can cause acute, severe anemia associated with severe abdominal spasms, headaches, back pain[seattlecca.org] […] and red nodules in the skin over large areas, like the entire back.[patient.info]

  • Immune Hemolytic Anemia

Splenic sequestration of red cells was demonstrated, and marked reduction of hemolysis occurred after corticosteroid therapy.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Dark urine and, occasionally, back pain may be reported by patients with intravascular hemolysis. The skin may appear jaundiced or pale.[aafp.org] Until recently, all cephalosporin-induced immune hemolytic anemias appeared to react by a "penicillin-type" drug adsorption mechanism, and hemolysis was extravascular.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Traumatic Hemolytic Anemia

The skin may appear jaundiced or pale.[aafp.org] Severe acute hemolysis can be appropriate blood transfusion.[healthfrom.com]

  • Paroxysmal Cold Hemoglobinuria

The hemolysis resolved with warmth, and administration of dexamethasone.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Dark urine and, occasionally, back pain may be reported by patients with intravascular hemolysis. The skin may appear jaundiced or pale.[aafp.org] She presented 9 months later with recurrent hemolysis. She was given another course of rituximab that again resulted in termination of hemolysis.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
