686 Possible Causes for Hepatomegaly, Iron Increased

  • Chronic Alcoholism

Hepatomegaly (in chronic alcoholic liver disease the liver is shrunken). Ascites; gonadal atrophy. Atrial fibrillation and cardiomyopathy.[patient.info] Other factors that may trigger type 1 PCT include oestrogen, iron and viral infections (especially hepatitis C).[dermnetnz.org] Characteristic ultrasonographic findings include a hyperechoic liver with or without hepatomegaly.[clevelandclinicmeded.com]

  • Hemochromatosis

[…] transferrin saturation (TS); ALT; AST; GGT; elevated C-reactive protein; ß-thalassemia; neutrophils; lymphocytes; monocytes; platelets; metacarpophalangeal joint hypertrophy; hepatomegaly[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Recent studies have shown an increased concentration of redox-active iron in plasma in patients with increased transferrin saturation.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Eight of the 16 homozygous subjects had clinical findings that were consistent with the presence of hereditary hemochromatosis, such as hepatomegaly, skin pigmentation, and[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Portal Cirrhosis

The presence of this triad in a patient with unexplained hepatomegaly is indicative of portal cirrhosis.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] The liver becomes large, even huge (hepatomegaly). The normal liver weighs about 1,200 grams (2.6 lb).[en.wikipedia.org]

  • Pernicious Anemia

Some people with Pernicious Anemia may have an abnormally enlarged liver (hepatomegaly) or spleen (splenomegaly).[rarediseases.org] Individuals suffering iron deficiency might take oral iron supplements and increase their dietary iron intake, while individuals suffering from pernicious anemia might receive[livestrong.com] Hepatomegaly and splenomegaly may be present.[patient.info]

  • Thalassemia

Figure 1 Probability of OS by age and hepatomegaly. Figure 2 Probability of DFS by age and hepatomegaly.[doi.org] The predominant mechanisms driving the process of iron loading include increased iron burden secondary to transfusion therapy in TDT and enhanced intestinal absorption secondary[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Abstract Iron overload (IOL) due to increased intestinal iron absorption constitutes a major clinical problem in patients with non-transfusion-dependent thalassemia (NTDT)[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Leukemia

Five features were present in 50% of children: hepatomegaly (64%), splenomegaly (61%), pallor (54%), fever (53%) and bruising (52%).[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Stage II Stage II CLL is characterized by absolute lymphocytosis with either hepatomegaly or splenomegaly with or without lymphadenopathy.[web.archive.org] […] tiredness and fatigue Pain in bone Fever accompanied by chills Excessive sweating especially during night hours Easy prone to infections Bleeding or bruising very easily Hepatomegaly[symptoma.com]

  • Acute Myelocytic Leukemia

Multivariate analysis showed that grades 1 or 2 GVHD (P .008) and no hepatomegaly at diagnosis (P .014) were associated with improved relapse-free survival (RFS).[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] An iron stain usually shows increased iron stores and may show ring sideroblasts (Figure 2, B [inset]).[archivesofpathology.org] The potential for neurotoxicity has aroused concern about the use of high-dose cytarabine in elderly patients who, ironically, have a higher likelihood of having drug-resistant[doi.org]

  • Glycogen Storage Disease Type 1

The syndrome results in hepatomegaly secondary to glycogen accumulation, glucose and galactose intolerance, fasting hypoglycaemia, a characteristic proximal tubular nephropathy[en.wikipedia.org] […] serum iron Renal Fanconi syndrome Pancreatic hypoplasia Renal cortical cysts Ureteropelvic junction obstruction Abnormality of iron homeostasis Abnormality of the anterior[mendelian.co] Abstract A male child presented at 5 months of age with vomiting, diarrhoea, hypoglycaemia and hepatomegaly.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Viral Hepatitis

Three patients presented only jaundice and hepatomegaly; one also had liver failure.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] In the icteric phase, the patients develop jaundice, gastrointestinal disturbance, dark urine, gray-colored stools, right upper quadrant pain, and hepatomegaly.[symptoma.com] Rare manifestations of CMV hepatitis include tender hepatomegaly, granulomatous hepatitis, anicteric or icteric cholestatic hepatitis, and acute hepatitis with massive necrosis[doi.org]

  • Cooley's Anemia

Abdominal imaging such as ultrasound scanning, MRI, or CT may show gallstones, liver cirrhosis, and hepatomegaly.[symptoma.com] Hepatomegaly can result from a number of mechanisms; extramedullary erthyropoiesis, hepatitis due to chronic transfusion associated infections, and iron overload.[pathophys.org] Feeding problems, diarrhea, irritability, recurrent bouts of fever, and progressive enlargement of the abdomen caused by splenomegaly and hepatomegaly may occur.[orpha.net]
