14 Possible Causes for Hyperactive Bowel Sounds, Nausea, Tympanitic Abdomen

  • Intestinal Obstruction

Abstract BACKGROUND: Ondansetron use for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy has increased in the last years, although its maternal and fetal safety is not conclusive.[] Examination revealed hyperactive bowel sounds with scant fecal matter on rectal examination.[] A woman in her 40s was admitted to Nagoya City University Hospital with fatigue, anorexia, nausea and vomiting.[]

  • Small Bowel Obstruction

On the other hand, if very hyperactive bowel sounds are heard they are indicative of mechanical obstruction.[] A 66-year-old man presented to the emergency department complaining of lower abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting.[] We present the case of a 61-year-old man with no previous surgery who presented with central abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.[]

  • Large Bowel Obstruction

At first, enteric stimuli resulting from the obstruction cause an increase in propulsive activity, causing hyperactive bowel sounds.[] The most common symptoms include not being able to pass gas or have a bowel movement, nausea, vomiting, bloating, abdominal swelling and pain.[] His abdomen was distended, tympanitic to percussion, and nontender. Bowel sounds were quiet, but present.[]

  • Cecal Volvulus

As regards clinical examination, it demonstrated a distended tender abdomen with hyperactive bowel sounds. Laboratory works were within normal limits.[] Symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, cystic abdominal mass, and high-pitched bowel sounds.[] Abdomen Rebound Tenderness: in cases with peritonitis/bowel ischemia Nausea/Vomiting (see Nausea and Vomiting, [[Nausea and Vomiting]]) Obstipation : failure to pass stools[]

  • Volvulus

bowel sounds High rate of mortality, particularly in older patients ( Eur Rev Med Pharmacol Sci 2013;17:127 ) Radiology description Dilated loops of intestine Volvulus may[] The most frequent findings were abdominal pain (100%), emesis (91.7%) and nausea (83.3%).[] abdomen Abdominal distention /- palpable mass Diagnosis Abdominal plain films usually diagnostic Inverted U-shaped appearance of distended sigmoid loop Largest and most dilated[]

  • Ileus

Continued absence of bowel sounds suggests paralytic ileus whereas hyperactive bowel sounds may indicate a mechanical ileus ( Ruis-Tovar etal., 2010 ).[] Postoperative nausea and vomiting have high incidences.[] Radiologically, the abdomen shows gasfilled loops of intestine with multiple fluid levels 10.[]

  • Sigmoid Volvulus

On physical examination, bowel sounds were hyperactive, the abdomen was distended, firm, and diffusely tender to palpation with guarding.[] This life-threatening diagnosis should be considered in young patients presenting with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and constipation.[] Distention may compromise Respiratory & cardiac function Tympanitic abdomen, Abdominal distention /- palpable mass Diagnosis - Abdominal plain films usually diagnostic Inverted[]

  • Abdominal Visceral Abscess

Abdominal examination revealed hyperactive bowel sounds and tenderness in the epigastrium & RUQ. Liver span was 14 cm. The rest of the examination was unremarkable.[] Patients may also have nausea and vomiting.[] With the patient adequately undressed and comfortable, systematically examine the abdomen - inspection, percussion (the abdomen may be tympanitic in bowel obstruction), palpation[]

  • Paralytic Ileus

Bowel sounds are generally minimal or absent. In contrast, mechanical obstructions are associated with hyperactive bowel sounds.[] On day 12, the patient complained of nausea, abdominal pain and tenderness, and infrequent bowel movements; imaging studies on day 13 indicated paralytic ileus.[] Radiologically, the abdomen shows gasfilled loops of intestine with multiple fluid levels 10.[]

  • Colonic Pseudo-Obstruction

sounds can be normal or hyperactive in about 40% Imaging Findings Plain films of the abdomen are the study of choice Colon is dilated May have multiple, long fluid levels[] Gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea without fever are common in patients treated with mycophenolate mofetil.[] The physical exam is remarkable for a distended, tympanitic abdomen, hypoactive bowel sounds, and sometimes fever and abdominal tenderness.[]
