22 Possible Causes for Hyperactive Bowel Sounds, Tenderness in the Right Upper Quadrant

  • Liver Abscess

    On systemic examination there was mild tenderness of the right upper quadrant of the abdomen.[] Abdominal examination revealed hyperactive bowel sounds and tenderness in the epigastrium & RUQ. Liver span was 14 cm. The rest of the examination was unremarkable.[] There was no rebound tenderness. A lesion with heterogeneous radiodensity was noted in the right upper abdomen on chest radiography (Panel A, arrowheads).[]

  • Gallstone Ileus

    Common abdominal signs include abdominal distension and hyperactive bowel sounds [ 4 ].[] There was mild tenderness in the midepigastrium and right upper and lower quadrants, but no rebound tenderness or guarding.[] Physical examination showed distended, mild tender abdomen and hyperactive bowel sound.[]

  • Amebiasis

    bowel sound, vomiting, and change in stool texture.[] Other symptoms include bloody stools, nausea, vomiting, fever and tenderness in the upper right quadrant of the torso. It can even lead to anemia due to blood loss.[] Abdominal tenderness and weight loss are common with amebic colitis. Amebic liver abscess presents with right upper quadrant pain.[]

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome

    The bowel sounds may vary depending on whether the patient has constipation (bowel sounds may be hypoactive) or diarrhea (bowel sounds may be hyperactive).[]

  • Pneumoperitoneum

    Physical examination revealed all patients with relaxed abdominal wall except 1 patient with abdominal distension had slight muscle stiffness and hyperactive bowel sounds.[] The tenderness was diffuse, but was most prominent in the right upper abdominal quadrant; moreover, rebound tenderness was noted.[]

  • Diverticular Abscess

  • Abdominal Disorder

    Auscultation Hyperactive bowel sounds are present initially in the mechanical intestinal obstruction. Abdominal aortic and renal bruit may also be heard.[] The only other significant finding was the tenderness in the right upper quadrant of her abdomen.[] Palpation of the abdomen usually reveals tenderness in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen. Murphy’s sign is typically present ( 2 ).[]

  • Meckel Diverticulum

    The abdomen was soft with hyperactive bowel sounds and non-specific right lower abdominal quadrant tenderness.[] His abdomen was not distended but tender and guarding in the right upper and lower quadrants. Right flank tenderness was also elicited.[]

  • Cecal Volvulus

    As regards clinical examination, it demonstrated a distended tender abdomen with hyperactive bowel sounds.   • Partial Small Bowel Obstruction

    Patients showed symptoms between 1 and 20 days postoperatively and had findings ranging from hypoactive (45%), to normal (30%), to hyperactive (25%) bowel sounds.[] Abdominal examination revealed distension with paraumbilical and right upper quadrant tenderness but no associated peritonism, bowel sound were initially active but soon diminished[] Her physical exam reveals hyperactive bowel sounds, diffuse abdominal tenderness and distention.
