22 Possible Causes for Increased Area of Cardiac Dullness, Pleural Effusion on Chest X-Ray, Sudden Death

  • Cardiomyopathy

In patients with congestive heart failure, chest x-ray will show signs of congestion, an enlarged cardiac silhouette and possibly pleural effusions ( Figure 3 ).[] A thorough family history of juvenile sudden death, ventricular arrhythmias and ICD implants should always be sought.[] METHODS: Two cases of sudden cardiac death owing to ARVC were reported.[]

  • Congestive Heart Failure

The daily dosage was adjusted on the basis of the patient's clinical response and her follow-up chest x-ray studies.[] The basic pharmacology of PDE inhibitors is presented and the use of PDE-3 inhibitors for the treatment of heart failure causing an increase in sudden death is also reviewed[] Testing may include a chest x-ray to look for cardiomegaly (an enlarged heart), pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs), or pleural effusion (collection of fluid around the lungs[]

  • Suppurative Pericarditis

Initial chest X-ray showed cardiomegaly, bibasilar and retrocardiac parenchymal opacities, without signs of pulmonary congestion or pleural effusion (Figure 1).[] Patients with large pericardial effusions have an area of increased dullness at the base of the heart in addition to generalized enlargement of the area of cardiac dullness[] In sudden cardiac death the focus is on heart function. This means that actual death and sudden cardiac death is not, by definition, the same thing.[]

  • Cardiac Tamponade

[…] her chest X-ray.[] We report sudden death in a patient diagnosed with AAAD and in whom critical care ultrasound highly indicated hemorrhagic cardiac tamponade.[] Clinical presentation ranges from chest pain alone to ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction, ventricular fibrillation, and sudden death.[]

  • Pericardial Effusion

Radiologic examinations were carried out, and the computed tomography scan revealed a hepatomegaly and a chest X-ray showed evidence of a unilateral pleural effusion.[] Considerable amounts of pericardial fluid may muffle heart sounds, increase the area of cardiac dullness, and change the size and shape of the cardiac silhouette.[] Presenting symptoms include heart failure, arrhythmias, sudden death, cyanosis and chest pain.[]

  • Dilated Cardiomyopathy

Generalized enlargement of the heart is seen upon normal chest X-ray. Pleural effusion may also be noticed, which is due to pulmonary venous hypertension.[] The patient presented with sudden arrhythmic death and survived with permanent anoxic brain injury.[] Chest x-ray shows cardiomegaly, usually of all chambers.[]

  • Mallory-Weiss Syndrome

, unexpected death.[] […] unexpected death ( Arch Kriminol 2002;209:36, Srp Arh Celok Lek 2001;129:257, J Clin Pathol 1991;44:787 ) Boerhaave syndrome: esophageal rupture, usually lethal Etiology[] A cause of sudden unexpected death due to massive haematemesis without antecedent vomiting. ( 3570703 ) O'Reilly U....Connolly C.E. 1987 50 Snore-induced Mallory-Weiss syndrome[]

  • Alcoholic Cardiomyopathy

Blood tests will show signs of liver injury and confirm alcohol abuse, while chest X-ray shows pulmonary congestion, cardiomegaly and pleural effusions.[] The frequency of alcoholic cardiomyopathy among victims of sudden death suggests that alcoholic cardiomyopathy is a risk factor for sudden cardiac death.[] Abstract The morphologic features of alcoholic cardiomyopathy in human sudden death compared with those of experimental alcoholic cardiomyopathy (6 weeks of alcohol administration[]

  • Cardiomegaly

Chest X - ray showed cardiomegaly and bilateral pleural effusion. 3.[] Forensic pathologists encounter a wide range of deaths due to natural causes. Natural deaths can be sudden and unexpected, occurring in apparently healthy people.[] Both coronary artery disease (CAD) and cardiomyopathy may present with sudden cardiac death (SCD).[]

  • Pericardial Cyst

These cysts frequently occur in the right cardiophrenic angle and their diagnosis is usually suspected after an abnormal chest X-ray is obtained.[] Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of sudden death in the world.[] death etc.[]
