23 Possible Causes for Increased Area of Cardiac Dullness, Pleural Effusion on Chest X-Ray, Tachycardia

  • Cardiomyopathy

In patients with congestive heart failure, chest x-ray will show signs of congestion, an enlarged cardiac silhouette and possibly pleural effusions ( Figure 3 ).[clinicaladvisor.com] Junctional ectopic tachycardia (JET) is a rare form of arrhythmia that is most commonly seen during infancy.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Case 2 presented isolated LVNC with nonsustained ventricle tachycardia. A cesarean section was performed at 36 weeks' gestation because of placenta previa.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Congestive Heart Failure

The daily dosage was adjusted on the basis of the patient's clinical response and her follow-up chest x-ray studies.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] ECG and telemetry revealed relatively slow supraventricular tachycardia, which did not trigger the alert, and catheter ablation successfully controlled the heart failure.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Cardiac causes include arrhythmias (tachycardia or bradycardia), structural heart disease, and myocardial dysfunction (systolic or diastolic).[emedicine.com]

  • Pericardial Effusion

Radiologic examinations were carried out, and the computed tomography scan revealed a hepatomegaly and a chest X-ray showed evidence of a unilateral pleural effusion.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Considerable amounts of pericardial fluid may muffle heart sounds, increase the area of cardiac dullness, and change the size and shape of the cardiac silhouette.[merckmanuals.com] Emergency physicians must maintain vigilance in suspecting pericardial effusion and tamponade in patients with known or suspected malignancy who present with tachycardia,[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Mallory-Weiss Syndrome

D supine with the head of the bed flat, provide supplemental oxygen via non-rebreather mask, place him on a cardiac monitor, which shows sinus tachycardia, and obtain peripheral[journals.lww.com] […] in vomit blood in stool dark stools epigastric pain back pain Physical exam upper GI bleed hemodynamic instability can occur with large bleeds signs include hypotension/tachycardia[step2.medbullets.com] If epinephrine is administered, the patient needs assessment for cardiovascular complications such as hypertension or tachycardia.[medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com]

  • Dilated Cardiomyopathy

Generalized enlargement of the heart is seen upon normal chest X-ray. Pleural effusion may also be noticed, which is due to pulmonary venous hypertension.[en.wikipedia.org] Here, we report a Chinese family with typical DCM, ventricular tachycardia, syncope, and SCD.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Chest x-ray shows cardiomegaly, usually of all chambers.[merckmanuals.com]

  • Suppurative Pericarditis

Initial chest X-ray showed cardiomegaly, bibasilar and retrocardiac parenchymal opacities, without signs of pulmonary congestion or pleural effusion (Figure 1).[revistas.unal.edu.co] Patients with large pericardial effusions have an area of increased dullness at the base of the heart in addition to generalized enlargement of the area of cardiac dullness[tele.med.ru] Tachycardia will lead to increase oxygen demand with reduction in blood supply because of the shorter duration of diastole, which reduces coronary blood flow.[biomedsearch.com]

  • Cardiac Tamponade

[…] her chest X-ray.[dear-medic.jp] Despite compensatory tachycardia, the decrease in cardiac filling leads to a fall in cardiac output and to arterial hypoperfusion of vital organs.[doi.org] These patients often develop frequent ascites and present with clinical signs and symptoms similar to cardiac tamponade (tachycardia, hypotension and dyspnea).[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Alcoholic Cardiomyopathy

Blood tests will show signs of liver injury and confirm alcohol abuse, while chest X-ray shows pulmonary congestion, cardiomegaly and pleural effusions.[radcliffecardiology.com] Cough containing mucus, or pink, frothy material Decreased urine output (oliguria) Need to urinate at night (nocturia) Heart palpitations (irregular heart beat) Rapid pulse (tachycardia[en.wikipedia.org] ECG showed LAE and sinus tachycardia. Coronary angiogram demonstrated normal coronary arteries.[apjmt.mums.ac.ir]

  • Peripartum Cardiomyopathy

Chest X-ray showed pulmonary interstitial edema, an increase in the cardiac silhouette and bilateral pleural effusion.[signavitae.com] However, both the postural tachycardia and sinus tachycardia persisted.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Chest X-ray can show cardiomegaly, pulmonary congestion, and pleural effusion.[kjim.org]

  • Pericarditis

The chest X-ray showed a white lung on the left and the transthoracic ultrasound revealed a pericardial effusion, resulting in pericardial drainage and pleural puncture that[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Considerable amounts of pericardial fluid may muffle heart sounds, increase the area of cardiac dullness, and change the size and shape of the cardiac silhouette.[merckmanuals.com] BACKGROUND: Pericardial adhesions can prevent epicardial access and restrict catheter movement during mapping and ablation of ventricular tachycardia (VT).[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
