1,057 Possible Causes for Iron Deficiency, Photosensitivity

  • Erythropoietic Protoporphyria

Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) is a rare inherited disease characterized by dermal photosensitivity due to the accumulation of photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX.[] This indicated that anemia in EPP resulted from an absolute iron deficiency.[] Following sunlight exposure, the resulting photosensitivity is manifested first as pain, later as erythema, edema and dermal lesions.[]

  • Alopecia

Khellin is a furanochromone photosensitizer whose chemical structure is close to psoralens and has previously proven its efficacy in vitiligo in association with ultraviolet[] It can also be attributed to underlying diseases such as lupus and iron deficiency, because of a hormonal imbalance or with the use of certain medications.[] PUVA: Treatment consisting of the combination of a photosensitive medication (psoralens) and long wavelength ultraviolet light (UVA).[]

  • Iron Deficiency

[…] activity of uroporphyrinogen III synthase and the accumulation of nonphysiologic isomer I porphyrin metabolites, resulting in ineffective erythropoiesis and devastating skin photosensitivity[] deficiency progresses to iron-deficiency anemia.[] Iron deficiency anemia is a significant problem worldwide and more so in developing countries, like India.[]

  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

We reported two cases of SLE with psoriasis vulgaris with clinical manifestations as recurrent erythroderma with photosensitivity.[] She was diagnosed with SLE with pernicious anemia and iron deficiency anemia. The rare association of SLE with pernicious anemia was reported previously in few patients.[] While denying a history of any rash, photosensitivity, oral ulcers, or seizures, his physical examination did reveal metacarpal phalangeal joint swelling along with noted[]

  • Hypermenorrhea

Prolonged use of Yarrow may cause photosensitivity of the skin in some people. Therefore, it is advisable not to exceed 15 days of treatment.[] Iron deficiency anemia may result if the condition goes untreated, as the excessive bleeding can deplete the iron levels of the blood.[] Low hemoglobin may be the result of insufficient iron. Menorrhagia may deplete iron levels enough to increase the risk of iron deficiency anemia.[]

  • Cheilitis

The target of our study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of PDT in actinic cheilitis, using a methyl-ester of aminolevulinic acid (MAL) as topical photosensitizing[] Plummer-Vinson syndrome is the combination of dysphagia, angular cheilitis , atrophic glossitis, and esophageal webbing in the setting of iron deficiency anemia.[] Daylight PDT (D-PDT) is a novel PDT modality in which the activation of the topical photosensitizer is induced by the exposure to natural daylight instead of artificial light[]

  • Acute Intermittent Porphyria

Photosensitivity may be controlled by avoiding exposure to light. Removal of the spleen is useful in some cases of the erythropoietic type of porphyria.[] These findings suggest that the neurovisceral symptoms of AIP are not associated with generalized hepatic heme deficiency and support the neurotoxicity of ALA and/or PBG.[] […] used in oral contraceptives and prostate cancer treatment), and possibly smoking, combine to cause an enzyme deficiency in the liver.[]

  • Acute Hepatic Porphyria

Differential diagnoses for variagate porphyria and hereditary coproporphyria also include photosensitivity.[] Inducing iron deficiency improves erythropoiesis and photo sensivity in congenital erythropoietic porphyria. Blood . 2015;126(2):257–261.[] The majority of patients exhibit acute attacks, while 20% can also present with skin-related symptoms, such as photosensitivity and blistering skin lesions.[]

  • Mucolipidosis

Video-electroencephalogram (EEG) [Figure 1] was consistent with a symptomatic generalized epilepsy with no photosensitivity.[] While laboratory analyses of blood samples reveal increased levels of gastrin, iron deficiency anemia may also be diagnosed.[] deficiency.[]

  • Whipple Disease

Some of the side effects of this combination of medications are loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and photosensitivity.[] Investigations revealed iron deficiency anaemia and hypoalbuminaemia. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed white patchy lesions in the duodenum.[] Protein and vitamin malabsorption may lead to oedema and ascites, anaemia from iron and folate malabsorption, bleeding and clotting disorders from vitamin K deficiency, and[]
