529 Possible Causes for Iron Deficiency, Photosensitivity

  • Erythropoietic Protoporphyria

Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) is a rare inherited disease characterized by dermal photosensitivity due to the accumulation of photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX.[] These disorders are often associated with iron deficiency anaemia (IDA).[] Following sunlight exposure, the resulting photosensitivity is manifested first as pain, later as erythema, edema and dermal lesions.[]

  • Acute Hepatic Porphyria

Differential diagnoses for variagate porphyria and hereditary coproporphyria also include photosensitivity.[] Inducing iron deficiency improves erythropoiesis and photo sensivity in congenital erythropoietic porphyria. Blood. 2015;126(2):257–261.[] The majority of patients exhibit acute attacks, while 20% can also present with skin-related symptoms, such as photosensitivity and blistering skin lesions.[]

  • Acute Intermittent Porphyria

Photosensitivity may be controlled by avoiding exposure to light. Removal of the spleen is useful in some cases of the erythropoietic type of porphyria.[] These findings suggest that the neurovisceral symptoms of AIP are not associated with generalized hepatic heme deficiency and support the neurotoxicity of ALA and/or PBG.[] Acquired forms Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) typically is acquired rather than inherited, although the enzyme deficiency may be inherited.[]

  • Iron Deficiency

[…] activity of uroporphyrinogen III synthase and the accumulation of nonphysiologic isomer I porphyrin metabolites, resulting in ineffective erythropoiesis and devastating skin photosensitivity[] Iron deficiency can develop insidiously leading to increased fatigability, lassitude, poor immunity, irritability, and iron deficiency anemia.[] Iron deficiency anemia is a significant problem worldwide and more so in developing countries, like India.[]

  • Porphyria

Arch Dermatol. 2000;136(9):1152–1157. doi:10.1001/archderm.136.9.1152 Download citation file: 2019 New![] And it is known that porphyria, an iron deficiency, which is thought to lie behind the vampire myth, has run in the Royal Family.[] Zn protoporphyrin increases in many conditions other than porphyrias, including iron deficiency, lead poisoning and almost any type of disorder that affects erythrocytes.[]

  • Erythropoietic Porphyria

[…] activity of uroporphyrinogen III synthase and the accumulation of nonphysiologic isomer I porphyrin metabolites, resulting in ineffective erythropoiesis and devastating skin photosensitivity[] Here, we describe a case of CEP with infancy onset blistering, photosensitivity, red colored urine and teeth along with scarring but without any feature of hemolysis.[] Clinical features include photosensitive blistering and severe anemia. Wood's lamp fluorescence of the diaper is a useful screening test.[]

  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

We reported two cases of SLE with psoriasis vulgaris with clinical manifestations as recurrent erythroderma with photosensitivity.[] She was diagnosed with SLE with pernicious anemia and iron deficiency anemia. The rare association of SLE with pernicious anemia was reported previously in few patients.[] This photosensitivity can be accompanied by worsening of inflammation throughout the body, called a "flare" of the disease.[]

  • Porphyria Cutanea Tarda

Systemic lupus erythematosus, of complex pathophysiology and pleomorphic clinical manifestations, is similar to PCT regarding photosensitivity.[] deficiency anemia(1), Gene mutation(7), 5-aminolevulinic acid(3), Trace elements(24), Ageing(22), Antioxidation(4), Immunology(601), Nutrition(261), Biochemistry(491), Public[] Photosensitive skin Photosensitive skin rashes Photosensitivity Sensitivity to sunlight Skin photosensitivity Sun sensitivity [ more ] 0000992 Erythema 0010783 Hyperpigmentation[]

  • Hypermenorrhea

Prolonged use of Yarrow may cause photosensitivity of the skin in some people. Therefore, it is advisable not to exceed 15 days of treatment.[] Iron deficiency anemia may result if the condition goes untreated, as the excessive bleeding can deplete the iron levels of the blood.[] Low hemoglobin may be the result of insufficient iron. Menorrhagia may deplete iron levels enough to increase the risk of iron deficiency anemia.[]

  • Onycholysis

Sparfloxacin is an antibiotic in the quinolone group of antibacterial agents, which often induce photosensitive skin reactions, more often phototoxic reactions than photoallergic[] As an initial screen for associated systemic disorders, it is reasonable to check a complete blood count and iron panel (for iron deficiency anemia), an antinuclear antibody[] Clinical findings include photosensitivity, vesicles, bullae, milia, and scarring in sun-exposed areas.[]
