  • Familial Myelofibrosis

Two siblings developed a fulminant fatal myeloproliferative disease at 7 and 8 weeks of age. The illness presented with pallor, haemorrhagic symptoms, and hepatosplenomegaly, and the blood picture was that of pancytopenia and leucoerythroblastosis. Bone marrow histology showed reduced haemopoiesis with generalised[…][ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

This is known as a 'left shift'. A very high WBC count ( 50,000) with pronounced left shift that is not a leukemia is known as a "leukemoid reaction".[library.med.utah.edu] Results: The patient died of multiple organ failure 2 months after being diagnosed with leukocytosis.[dovepress.com] In this particular case, leukocytosis represented a true leukemoid reaction as suggested by the elevated LAP and lack of a left shift on the WBC differential.[pancreas.imedpub.com]
