82 Possible Causes for Most Cases Are Responsive to Steroids

  • Hypersensitivity

Allergy and anaphylaxis to anaesthetic agents, antibiotics, aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are responsible for most drug hypersensitivity cases, but reliable[publications.parliament.uk]

  • Infectious Mononucleosis

Steroids don't cure the disease, but serve to reduce the inflammatory response. In most cases of mononucleosis, hospitalization isn't necessary.[infoplease.com] On rare occasions, a short-term course of steroids like prednisone may be of value for extreme throat swelling that inhibits swallowing or endangers breathing.[infoplease.com]

  • Chronic Prostatitis

Anti-inflammatory drugs were the best therapy when treatment response was the outcome; although steroids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were pooled together because[doi.org] In this case, α-blockers plus antibiotics was consistently the best therapy when the outcome was symptom scores.[doi.org] Network meta-analysis circumvents this problem by creating indirect comparisons and allowing data synthesis that can help identify the most effective therapy.[doi.org]

  • Gastric Ulcer

This is responsible for up to 90 per cent of all cases of peptic ulceration.[netdoctor.co.uk] The second most common cause is damage inflicted by painkilling medicines, such as aspirin (eg Disprin) or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen[netdoctor.co.uk]

  • Polymyalgia Rheumatica

A good response to initial steroids was seen in 221 patients (72.7%), and evidence of a process of diagnostic exclusion was seen in 68 cases (22.4%).[bjgp.org] Table 1 Baseline demographics of primary care PMR cohort Documentation of the symptoms used to make a diagnosis was demonstrated in 248 (81.6%) cases, with the most common[bjgp.org] […] primary symptom being bilateral shoulder pain (45.7%) and myalgia being the second most common symptom ( Table 2 ).[bjgp.org]

  • Acute Interstitial Nephritis

Bone marrow biopsy was not performed in most cases and only available for 2 patients including ours. 9 patients treated with steroids had good responses but 1 patient died[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Cushing Syndrome

[…] for most cases of Cushing’s syndrome.[web.archive.org] Cortisol-like steroid drugs, or glucocorticoids, are by far the main medications linked to Cushing’s syndrome.[web.archive.org] […] glucocorticoid 1, 2 A benign or malignant tumor in the body that makes the adrenal (pronounced uh-DREEN-l ) gland produce too much cortisol 1, 2 Medication Medication is responsible[web.archive.org]

  • Allergic Gastritis

Most cases require steroid medication (commonly prednisone) to induce remission. (Steroids are not effective in treating food allergies.)[iffgd.org] Most patients had good response to steroid therapy often followed by longer lasting symptom-free periods.[omicsonline.org] This disorder can be distinguished from food allergy by the lack of a specific offending food and the lack of a response to an elimination diet.[iffgd.org]

  • Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis
