75 Possible Causes for Onycholysis of Distal Nails

  • Onycholysis

We have observed a number of cases of onycholysis in which the distal nail bed appeared to shrink.[] An uncommon manifestation of phototoxicity, photo-onycholysis results in the separation of the distal nail from the nail bed.[] For other nail changes associated with onycholysis oil drop sign of psoriasis, distal onycholysis, subungual hyperkeratosis) the best location for intralesional injection[]

  • Onychomycosis

The infection was characterized clinically by yellow-brown discoloration of the nail plate, distal-lateral onycholysis and subungual hyperkeratosis of the first left toenail[] Distal onycholysis — the end of the nail lifts. The free edge often crumbles.[] Thickening of the distal and lateral aspects of the nail.[]

  • Psoriasis

Psoriatic nails often have a horizontal white or yellow margin at the tip of the nail called distal onycholysis because the nail is lifted away from the skin.[] Fingernails and toenails often exhibit small pits (pinpoint depressions) and/or larger yellowish-brown separations of the nail from the nail bed at the fingertip called distal[] Onycholysis allows air to enter the distal end of the nail plate leading to white color [27] [Figure 5] and [Figure 6].[]

  • Familial Multinodular Goiter

Changes in the nails are seen commonly as separation of the distal margin of the nail from the nail bed (i.e. onycholysis). The skin is warm, moist, and smooth.[]

  • Cronkhite-Canada Syndrome

All of these lead to onycholysis, which means detachment of the nail from the nail bed, starting at its distal and/or lateral attachment.[] […] into layers, and onychomadesis, nail shedding staring at the base and extending forward.[] […] tongue and loss of papillae, and patchy vitiligo. 3) Fingernails and toenails show discoloration, proximal nail plate separation and shedding, onychoschizia, splitting of nails[]

  • Acrodermatitis Continua of Hallopeau

ACH may involve the nail bed and distal phalanx, resulting in onycholysis, anonychia, and osteolysis of the distal phalanx.[] , nail bed involvement may cause salmon spots, subungual hyperkeratosis, and splinter hemorrhages, and psoriasis of the distal nail bed and hyponychium causes onycholysis[] The distal nail plate shows onycholysis usually at the corner.[]

  • Spondylitis

Nail changes like ridging, pitting and onycholysis are common in psoriatic arthritis.[] Though psoriatic distal inter-phalangeal joint arthritis is common in males incidence is similar in both sexes. There are many forms of psoriatic arthritis [ 25 ].[]

  • Oligoarthritis

Psoriatic nail pitting and onycholysis ( Figures 2 and 3 ) are additional features often correlated with distal interphalangeal joint involvement.[]

  • Subungual Fibroma

Psoriatic onycholysis can be considered the reference point for other forms of onycholysis and is typically distal (ie affecting the free margin of the nail), with variable[] Onycholysis (nail plate disorder due to trauma) Loosening or separation of the nail from the nail bed.[] Clinically, SE appears as a firm and fixed subungual nodule that elevates the nail plate and produces distal or lateral onycholysis.[]

  • Psoriatic Arthritis

Psoriatic nail pitting and onycholysis ( Figures 2 and 3 ) are additional features often correlated with distal interphalangeal joint involvement.[]
