135 Possible Causes for Ornithine Increased

  • Hyperornithinemia-Hyperammonemia-Homocitrullinuria Syndrome

Ornithine and homocitrulline also induced protein oxidative damage, increasing carbonyl formation and sulfhydryl oxidation.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Renal fraction excretion of citrulline, lysine, ornithine, glycine, alanine, and tyrosine increased more than 3-fold during ornithine priming, whereas all amino acids were[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] During therapy with citrulline and phenylbutyrate sodium, plasma ornithine levels increased in both patients, while plasma levels of glutamine and alanine decreased to normal[jamanetwork.com]

  • Hyperornithinemia

Urinary excretion of ornithine was also markedly increased.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Increased amounts of 3-amino-2-piperidone were found in the urine, but these did not increase after the arginine-induced increase in ornithine levels.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] There was no increase in serum proline after the oral loading of ornithine in the patients, whereas serum proline increased after the loading in normal controls.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Pseudomonas Aeruginosa

[…] converted to ornithine but not entirely consumed at the end of growth.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Under strictly anaerobic conditions (O2 at less than 1 ppm), growth could be measured as an increase in protein and proceeded in a non-exponential way; arginine was largely[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Liver Cirrhosis

It lowers blood ammonia levels by increasing metabolism of ammonia to glutamine.[dx.doi.org] Experimental therapies Oral L-ornithine-L-aspartate (LOLA) is a stable salt of two amino acids[ 194 ].[dx.doi.org]

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Hydroxyproline was increased in females with chronic fatigue ( Table 3, Females).[dx.doi.org] P5C is converted to glutamate semialdehyde (GSA) nonenzymatically, then to ornithine under stress conditions.[dx.doi.org] This reaction is catalyzed by what is often considered the reverse reaction of the mitochondrial enzyme, ornithine amino transferase (OAT).[dx.doi.org]

  • Nephrolithiasis

[…] of lysine, ornithine, cystine and arginine because of defective reabsorption in the nephron ( Table 6 ).[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] CYSTINE STONES Cystine stones are found in patients with inherited defects of dibasic amino acid transport in the kidney and intestine, leading to increased urinary excretion[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Zinc Deficiency

Rabbani and Prasad ( 49 ) observed a decrease in hepatic ornithine transcarbamoylase activity and an increase in plasma ammonia levels in zinc-deficient rats.[doi.org] Plasma ammonia and liver ornithine transcarbamoylase activity in zinc-deficient rats. Am J Physiol. 1978; 235 :E203–6 [ PubMed ] [ Google Scholar ] 50.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Plasma ammonia and liver ornithine transcarbamoylase activity in zinc-deficient rats . Am J Physiol. 1978 ; 235 : E203 – 6 . 50.[doi.org]

  • Schizophrenia

A metabolomics plasma study identified higher concentration of ornithine and lower concentrations of arginine, glutamine, histidine and phosphatidylcholine ae C38:6 in schizophrenic[polygenicpathways.co.uk] Cytokine challenge increases 3-hydroxykynurenine production Johansson et al, 2013 Schizophrenia patients frequently display reduced niacin flush responses Lien et al, 2013[polygenicpathways.co.uk] […] patients He et al, 2012 Serum levels of IL1B, IL6 TNF and adiponectin increased in first episode schizophrenia Song et al, 2013 Decreased IL10 serum levels in first-episode[polygenicpathways.co.uk]

  • Fibrolamellar Hepatocellular Carcinoma

[…] uracil, suggesting an ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency.[mdedge.com] These include suppression of the OTC enzyme or increased utilization of arginine by the tumor for proliferation, leading to a deficiency of ornithine and consequently a deficiency[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Given the persistently elevated ammonia level, a work-up for an underlying urea cycle disorder was performed, revealing trace citrulline and increased urine orotic acids and[mdedge.com]

  • Connective Tissue Disease

[…] hypertonia, seizures, psychosis Treatment: Nicotinamide Cystinuria Renal dibasic amino acid transporter — Biochemical profile: Elevated urinary cystine, lysine, arginine, and ornithine[merck.com] Clinical features: Nephrolithiasis, increased risk of impaired cerebral function Treatment: Maintenance of fluid intake, bicarbonate or citrate, penicillamine or mercaptopropionylglycine[merck.com]
