15 Possible Causes for Retinal Lesions with Tortuous Vessels

  • Retinopathy

Prenatal ultrasound revealed prominence of the left orbital soft tissue, and at birth, the patient was noted to have unilateral proptosis, tortuous retinal vessels, and intraretinal[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] […] of a congenital macrocystic lymphatic malformation of the orbit with associated venous stasis retinopathy that acutely normalized after drainage and sclerotherapy of the lesion[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Lymphatic Malformation

Prenatal ultrasound revealed prominence of the left orbital soft tissue, and at birth, the patient was noted to have unilateral proptosis, tortuous retinal vessels, and intraretinal[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] […] of a congenital macrocystic lymphatic malformation of the orbit with associated venous stasis retinopathy that acutely normalized after drainage and sclerotherapy of the lesion[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Hemangioblastoma

The retinal capillary hemangioblastoma appears as a red to orange tumor arising within the retina with large-caliber, tortuous afferent and efferent retinal blood vessels[aao.org] Fundus photography, especially ultra-widefield retinal imaging to capture the location, number and size of the peripheral lesions may be helpful in following the growth or[eyewiki.aao.org] Typically, patients are diagnosed in the second to third decades of life, although retinal lesions may be present at birth.[aao.org]

  • Intraocular Medulloepithelioma

Dilated and tortuous feeding retinal vessels may be evident.[clinicalgate.com] In its earliest clinical stage, retinoblastoma appears as a flat transparent to slightly whitish colored lesion in the sensory retina.[clinicalgate.com]

  • Hamartoma

There were tortuous fine retinal vessels overlying the lesion with radial retinal folds that appeared to be emanating from the infero-temporal aspect of the lesion.[journalretinavitreous.biomedcentral.com] Retinal vascular changes are prominent: the feeder and distal vessels are straight from traction and intrinsic vessels are tortuous and corkscrewed from contraction.[eyewiki.aao.org] […] capillary network superior and superotemporally to the optic nerve head with vessels appearing fine and tortuous in a corkscrew pattern (Fig. 3 ).[journalretinavitreous.biomedcentral.com]

  • Familial Capillary Hemangioma

The typical retinal capillary hemangioma appears as a reddish spherical lesion fed and drained by dilated tortuous retinal blood vessels ( Fig. 155-1 ).[medtextfree.wordpress.com] Typical appears as a reddish spherical lesion feed and drained by dilated tortuous retinal blood vessels.[eyewiki.aao.org]

  • Eales Disease

A large study of 144 eyes 13 have documented distribution of common retinal lesions as follows: periphlebitis and sheathing of vessels in 84% of eyes, kinky tortuous venules[nature.com]

  • Von Hippel-Lindau Disease

Fundus photography, especially ultra-widefield retinal imaging to capture the location, number and size of the peripheral lesions may be helpful in following the growth or[eyewiki.aao.org] Dilated fundus exam is essential in identifying all the existing RCHs, as they may reach up to 11 in number. [20] A classic diagnostic finding is the dilated, tortuous vessels[eyewiki.aao.org]

  • Retinal Phlebitis

A large study of 144 eyes 13 have documented distribution of common retinal lesions as follows: periphlebitis and sheathing of vessels in 84% of eyes, kinky tortuous venules[nature.com]

  • Retinal Cavernous Hemangioma

Small retinoblastomas appear as flat, translucent, white retinal lesions ( Fig. 6-3A ).[entokey.com] Although these tumors lack the markedly dilated and tortuous feeder vessels that are typically seen in association with capillary hemangiomas, normal or slightly dilated retinal[retinalphysician.com] With growth, the tumor appears more solid, elevated, and chalky-white, with overlying dilated tortuous blood vessels. Three growth patterns have been described.[entokey.com]
