560 Possible Causes for Retinal Scar

  • Best Disease

An eye from a Best disease donor with a T6R mutation was found to have deposits containing lipid and glycoconjugates within the central retinal scar.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Although treating new blood vessels may not lead to a great improvement in sight, it often helps to prevent further retinal damage from bleeding and scar tissue formation.[rnib.org.uk] These new blood vessels can leak which causes scar tissue and further sight loss.[rnib.org.uk]

  • Retinitis

Two patients were not treated (patients 1 and 8), one of whom (patient 8) had received an autologous transplant and was diagnosed with atrophic retinal scarring compatible[academic.oup.com] Of these cases, up to 40% are bilateral. 104 The diagnosis of ocular toxoplasmosis is based on characteristic retinal scars, supported by serologic antibody tests such as[retinalphysician.com] However, with time, these areas progress to active retinitis and scarring, suggesting involvement with the virus from the beginning.[retinalphysician.com]

  • Retinal Detachment

Four cases had a history of retinal degeneration (2 eyes) or preexisting retinal scars (2 eyes) at the area of RD, three of which underwent argon laser coagulation prior to[journals.plos.org] The scarring that results seals the retina to the underlying tissue, helping to prevent a retinal detachment.[aao.org] Each is designed to press the wall of the eye against the retinal holes, holding together until scarring heals the tears.[specialtyeyeinstitute.com]

  • Retinopathy

The scarring and bleeding can lead to retinal scarring or detachment from the back of the eye, resulting in vision loss. Why is retinopathy of prematurity a concern?[stanfordchildrens.org] It can also happen in more severe ROP—but even after the abnormal blood vessels go away, there may be retinal scarring that needs to be watched closely.[childrenshospital.org] Traction retinal detachment: scar tissue from neovascularization shrinks, causing the retina to wrinkle and pull from its normal position.[annapoliseyecare.com]

  • Proliferative Retinopathy

, venous irregularity, cluster haemorrhages and cotton wool spots (retinal scarring), causing sudden blindness due to vitreous haemorrhages, fibrosis and retinal detachment[medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com] They will reduce the proliferation without causing retinal scarring or epiretinal membrane formation.[diabeticretinopathy.org.uk] PDR may lead to vision loss and more permanent complications, such as neovascular glaucoma (damage to optic nerve) and retinal detachment due to formation of scar tissue.[nmceyecare.ae]

  • Retinal Laser Treatment

While conventional laser is an effective treatment, the retinal burns, result in permanent and often progressive retinal scarring, and can cause visual loss.[laureleye.com] scarring.[northerneyesurgeons.com.au] Silicone oil may be used if the retina has been detached for a long time or retinal scarring is present. Laser or freezing treatment is used to seal the retinal tears.[visioneyeinstitute.com.au]

  • Macular Degeneration

These abnormal blood vessels eventually scar, leading to permanent retinal damage and loss of central vision.[my.clevelandclinic.org] Disciform scars Disciform scars are the end-stage of exudative AMD in which the retinal tissue is replaced by scar tissue (usually vascularized).[amdbook.org] Disciform scars are usually dry and show marked destruction of all retinal layers.[amdbook.org]

  • Retinal Perforation

Similarly, in some people with retinal lesions such as lattice retinal degeneration or chorio-retinal scars, the vitreous membrane may be abnormally adherent to the retina[en.wikipedia.org] Surgery Pa-St Retinal Cryopexy Definition Retinal cryopexy, also called retinal cryotherapy , is a procedure that uses intense cold to induce a chorioretinal scar and to destroy[surgeryencyclopedia.com] […] conditions by destroying retinal tissue and inducing chorioretinal scar using extremely cold temperature.[docdoc.com]

  • Atrophic Retina

[…] hole or detached area with small, pinpoint scars to seal it to the back of the eye again.[drbishop.com] Majority of our patients showed peripheral retinal abnormalities such as lattice degeneration, small retinal tears, giant retinal tears, chorioretinal atrophic scars, vitreoretinal[omicsonline.org] Unfortunately, there is very little that one can do on a preventive basis to avoid atrophic retinal holes or lattice degeneration, but regular eye examinations and immediate[drbishop.com]

  • Central Retinal Vein Occlusion

scars.[emedicine.medscape.com] Retinal examination showed neo-scularization of the disc and persistent macular edema inth eyes, with focal laser scars evident in the left eye (seeure 2).[docslide.net] Fundus picture of the same patient with central retinal vein occlusion as in previous images, showing resolving neovascularization of the disc and panretinal photocoagulation[emedicine.medscape.com]
