219 Possible Causes for stylet

  • Appendicitis

With a narrow metallic stylet probe we carefully tried to enter the appendix lumen through the opposite side from its fundus but we were not able to enter it before cutting[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Meningitis

Reinsertion of the stylet before needle removal decreased the risk of headache (ARR, 11.3%; 95% CI, 6.50%-16.2%).[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] If there is still no fluid, reinsert the stylet and advance the needle slightly, withdrawing the stylet after each movement.[doi.org] Reinsertion of the stylet before needle removal should occur and patients do not require bed rest after the procedure.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Spinal Puncture

Reinsertion of the stylet before needle removal decreased the risk of headache (ARR, 11.3%; 95% CI, 6.50%-16.2%).[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Remove the stylet. If CSF is not obtained replace the stylet and advance the needle slightly then recheck for CSF.[rch.org.au] An easy way to remember this is that when performing the LP in the lateral position, the bead on the plastic end of the stylet and therefore the notch that the stylet fits[meds.queensu.ca]

  • Post Lumbar Puncture Headache

Replacement: Not replacing the stylet prior to spinal needle removal may cause increased post LP headache incidence.[foamem.com] […] with the outflowing CSF during LP and upon removal of the needle, be threaded back through the dura to produce prolonged CSF leakage ( 9758296 ) : 600 LPs performed 300 had stylet[rebelem.com] Stylet not replaced during needle removal. Features Post LP headache incidence varies (2% with small bore needles, 40% post puncture with large bore).[emed.ie]

  • Persistent Left Superior Vena Cava

In this case, we were unable to deliver the lead into RV using aforementioned stylets.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] The stylet was preshaped to facilitate its passage to the right ventricular apex.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] Adequate right ventricular lead positioning was achieved following numerous lead-stylet manipulations and careful looping in the atria to redirect its trajectory to the ventricular[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Traumatic Perforation of the Trachea

A junior medical resident intubated the patient, with a direct laryngoscope and a 7.5-mm endotracheal tube (ETT) with stylet.[rc.rcjournal.com] The airway stylet facilitates atraumatic access across narrow stenosis. The balloon is gently inflated, applying controlled radial pressure to the stricture.[acclarent.com] Tracheal injury related to emergency intubations as the results of tube-cuff overinflation, direct puncture by the use of a stylet, and multiple attempts at intubation has[hindawi.com]

  • Intratracheal Intubation

Stylet: A stylet can be inserted inside an endotracheal tube to make it more rigid, or to change the shape of the tube.[meds.queensu.ca] The intubation course will train students how to perform bag valve mask (BVM) ventilation and in different techniques to manage a difficult airway: using an intubating stylet[hospitalprocedures.org] […] or bougie Ensure the tip of the stylet is well within the ETT when it is advanced (i.e. not sticking out past the end of the ETT)[derangedphysiology.com]

  • Foreign Body in the Bronchus

[…] of the stylet by 5 cm.[apicareonline.com] […] anasthetized, laryngoscopy is performed with the patient in semirecumbent position.Unless the foreign body is visible in the airway, the trachea is intubated without delay with styleted[ijaweb.org] […] of foreign body with Magill forceps Persistent airway obstruction Consider attempting Endotracheal Intubation Push foreign body into one of the more distal Bronchi (with stylet[fpnotebook.com]

  • Nasal Foreign Body

RESULTS: Two patients presented with a retained stylet from nasal tube bridle system.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] METHODS: Patients were evaluated from 8/2012 to 9/2013 for retained bridle system insertion stylet.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov] OBJECTIVES: We aim to present two cases of a retained insertion stylet from nasal feeding tube bridle systems. STUDY DESIGN: Case series of two patients.[ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

  • Complication of Procedure

A subsequent attempt with a stiff stylet resulted in easy insertion, without cough or respiratory distress.[nejm.org] An easy way to remember this is that when performing the LP in the lateral position, the bead on the plastic end of the stylet and therefore the notch that the stylet fits[meds.queensu.ca] […] nasogastric tubes are generally considered safe, there is a risk of substantial pulmonary complications from blind insertion of small-caliber nasogastric tubes with a stiff stylet[nejm.org]
