Presentation
We present a case of acute silicosis with bilateral pneumothorax of a 28-year-old man working at a stone crusher factory for 1 year. He presented to the emergency department with cough, respiratory distress and diffuse chest pain. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
This pattern was present for both Alzheimer’s disease–related dementia and cerebrovascular disease etiologies, and persisted in analyses restricted to nonsmokers. [ajrccm.atsjournals.org]
Entire Body System
- Constitutional Symptom
Complicated Silicosis, dyspnea and productive cough often are accompanied by constitutional symptoms of malaise and weight loss Accelerated Silicosis -- occurs after exposure to larger amounts of silica over a shorter period of time (4-8 years). [silicosis.com]
Respiratoric
- Hoarseness
Patients with advanced silicosis may have trouble sleeping and experience chest pain, hoarseness, and loss of appetite. Silicosis patients are at high risk for Tuberculosis (TB). [silicosis.com]

Treatment
After various investigations and treatments the symptoms persisted and a lung biopsy was performed. Pathologic analysis disclosed the presence of silicotic crystals within lung tissue and mediastinal lymph nodes. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Supportive treatment includes cough medicine, bronchodilators, and oxygen if needed. Antibiotics are prescribed for respiratory infections as needed. Treatment also includes limiting exposure to irritants and quitting smoking. [nlm.nih.gov]
Approvals in advanced disease have signified a landmark shift in the treatment paradigms of many cancers. [annonc.oxfordjournals.org]
Is there a medical cure or any effective treatment for silicosis ? (Silicosis Treatment) [silicosis.com]
There is no cure for silicosis, and, since there is no effective treatment, control of the disease lies mainly in prevention. [britannica.com]
Prognosis
There is an accelerated form that occurs within 4 to 10 years (some say 5 to 15 years) after exposure and has a more rapid progression of lung changes and a poorer prognosis and a chronic form that usually occurs greater than 10 and often 20 years (some [web.archive.org]
Etiology
This pattern was present for both Alzheimer’s disease–related dementia and cerebrovascular disease etiologies, and persisted in analyses restricted to nonsmokers. [ajrccm.atsjournals.org]
If there is no progressive massive fibrosis and emphysema is present, then smoking plays a more significant role in the etiology of the emphysema and is often considered part of the etiology of the patient's disability. [web.archive.org]

Prevention
Prevention Silicosis is prevented by avoiding inhalation of dust containing free crystalline silica. [web.archive.org]

This will prevent breathing problems from becoming severe, as well as further damage to your lungs. If you work in a high-risk occupation or have a high-risk hobby, always wear a dust mask and do not smoke. [nlm.nih.gov]
Further studies are needed to define the extent and severity of silicosis in this community and to examine possible preventive measures. [thorax.bmj.com]
