Presentation
Alien hand syndrome as the presentation of cardioembolic stroke is extremely rare but can be terrifying to patients. [semanticscholar.org]

The AVF subtype presents with the disinhibited groping and reaching for objects that are within arms reach without the patients will or control. [ausmed.com]
This case is presented to create awareness of this interesting clinical scenario, which can be terrifying to the patients and confusing to the physicians who are not aware of it. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Unconsciousness
Thus, we argue that both precuneus as well as the IFG may reflect conflicts of agency in unconscious and unwanted movements. However, other explanations may also account for the activation of the right IFG. [journals.plos.org]
The mildest form of the syndrome is caused by damage to the brain’s parietal and/or occipital lobe, causing a hand to unconsciously avoid contact with objects by “levitating” with its fingers extended. [damninteresting.com]

Of these two disturbances, the former is better termed “somatoparaphrenia” ( Joynt and Goldstein 1975 ) or “asomatognosia” ( Thomas et al 1998 ) and is usually associated with hemianesthesia. [medlink.com]

Abnormal Involuntary Movement
Alien hand syndrome has been reported to be associated with several abnormal involuntary movements when different regions of the brain, like the corpus callosum, parietal region, or frontal region, are involved. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
-
Tonic Posturing
Thus, "alien hand" has been extended to include non-goal-directed, involuntary tonic posturing ( Bundick and Spinella 2000 ; Inzelberg et al 2000 ; Sabrie et al 2015 ), even though the patient may not indicate any sort of alien quality ( Ball et al 1993 [medlink.com]

Convulsions
The affected hand is not weak but maintains normal strength, and the hand movements are not spastic or convulsive. [ptproductsonline.com]
Treatment
Over the course of 4 months the rehabilitation treatment targeted toward the specific needs of the patient, allowed improvement in his ADL. [tandfonline.com]

There is currently no treatment for alien hand syndrome. All a patient can do to control the problem is to keep the hand busy by having it hold an object. [medicinenet.com]

Prognosis
When alien hand occurs with neurodegenerative diseases, such as corticobasal syndrome or multiple sclerosis, the prognosis for recovery is poor. Therapies for this disorder have not been well developed. [medlink.com]
Prognosis of CBD is poor with a mean survival of only 7 years[ 5 ]. Parkinsonism generally responds poorly to dopaminergic medication. The main emphasis of management is supportive with a multidisciplinary team approach. [academic.oup.com]
Etiology
The etiology includes neurosurgery, tumor, aneurysms, and rarely stroke ( 1 ). [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Herein, we review the literature to update advances in the understanding of the classification, pathophysiology, etiology, and treatment of AHS. [springermedizin.de]
Pathophysiology
Several theories are proposed to explain the pathophysiology. Herein, we review the literature to update advances in the understanding of the classification, pathophysiology, etiology, and treatment of AHS. [springermedizin.de]

This is regrettable because different pathophysiological mechanisms probably underlie the diverse behaviors in alien hand. [medlink.com]
Prevention
More extreme cases have involved involuntarily stuffing food in the mouth, preventing the normal hand from completing simple tasks and self inflicted punching or choking. [science.howstuffworks.com]
Some people may find that it’s helpful to hold an object in the alien hand to prevent it from performing tasks. It may help the individual with Alien Hand Syndrome or another person to give verbal commands to stop the actions. [parkinsonsresource.org]

Often he or she tries to prevent the hand from moving by grasping it firmly with the other hand. Patients with AHS describe the experience of their alien limb as if someone else moves the alien hand ( Goldstein, 1908 ). [frontiersin.org]
