Presentation
We present here a case of ameboma of the right colon simulating as colonic carcinoma. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
It has been reported that 55% of all patients who present extracolonic amebiasis also present ulcers in the region of the ileocecal valve. [scielo.org.co]
Clinical presentation ranges from mild diarrhoea episodes to dysentery and liver abscess. Ameboma, a complication caused by EH invasion of the intestinal wall, is a rare presentation of amebiasis, occurring approximately in 1.5% of cases. [revistagastroenterologiamexico.org]
Entire Body System
- Hodgkin Lymphoma
It may mimic colon carcinoma, Crohn's disease, carcinoma of the colon, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, tuberculosis, fungal infection, AIDS-associated lymphoma and Kaposi's sarcoma in colonoscopy findings. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

- Pseudotumor
Ameboma are ulcerative, exophytic, inflammatory masses up to 15 cm in diameter in patients with long standing colonic amoebic infections containing granulation tissue with pseudotumor appearance. [reed.es]

Gastrointestinal
- Lower Abdominal Pain
We present a 45-year-old male with intermittent bloody stool and right lower abdominal pain for about 1 month. A colon carcinoma-like mass was noted in his colonoscopy finding. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, weight loss, rectal bleeding and in some cases bowel obstructive symptoms.1,11 In endemic areas cramping, lower abdominal pain and a palpable mass may suggest the diagnosis. [revistagastroenterologiamexico.org]
Liver, Gall & Pancreas
- Liver Mass
A CT scan showed a cecal thickening and liver mass with suspected cecal carcinoma with infected necrotic liver metastasis. [reed.es]
Cardiovascular
- Tachycardia
The patient had tachycardia and a toxic look. Erect X-ray chest of the patient revealed air under the right dome of diaphragm. The patient underwent emergent laparotomy. [journals.lww.com]
Psychiatrical
- Suggestibility
The roentgenological appearance, in the correct clinical setting, may also suggest the diagnosis of ameboma. Treatment should include the tissue amebicide emetine hydrochloride, as well as antibiotics and luminal agents. Full Text [jamanetwork.com]
The imaging study suggested a sigmoid colon neoplasm that infiltrated the mesentery and free cavity liquid. Colonoscopy showed a proliferative, stenosing lesion and the surface with multiple ulcerations with fibrin attached. [alicia.concytec.gob.pe]
Histological examination found trophozoites inside mucinous exudate suggestive of Entamoeba histolytica. [hal.archives-ouvertes.fr]
Workup
Serum
- Normocytic Anemia
Normocytic anemia was also noted and suspected to be related to the bloody stool. Bedside abdominal echography showed no obvious liver abscess. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Neutrophilia
Laboratory investigations revealed leukocytosis with neutrophilia. Ultrasonography of the abdomen showed dilated bowel loops with no intraperitoneal collection and normal solid viscera. [journals.lww.com]
Laboratory studies reported leukocytosis (12,000 cell/mm3) with neutrophilia (60%) and eosinophilia (6%), normal liver and kidney function, and negative HIV serology. [actagastro.org]
Colonoscopy
- Polyps
Colonoscopy was also done at the emergency room and showed multiple small polyps over the terminal ileum and multiple indurated ulcerations over the rectum and cecum (fig. 1). [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

- Multiple Ulcerations
Colonoscopy showed a proliferative, stenosing lesion and the surface with multiple ulcerations with fibrin attached. As pain increased, she underwent surgery as an acute abdomen. She had a sigmoidectomy plus end-to-end coloncolonic anastomosis. [alicia.concytec.gob.pe]

Treatment
Follow-up colonoscopy 8 months post treatment showed complete remission. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Epidemiology
Although no epidemiological risk factor for amoebic infection was detected. We therefore highlight the awareness of amoebic infection and different manifestation even in non-endemic areas. [reed.es]

Since this could be confused with a neoplastic lesion, it is epidemiologically important to consider this entity as a possibility in patients who present ileocecal masses in zones where E. histolytica infections are endemic (11,12). [scielo.org.co]
Pathophysiology
Even if their pathophysiology is not fully understood, hemorrhagic complications are reported to affect 20-60% of patients suffering from severe leptospirosis, with an incidence of less than 10% of gastrointestinal bleeding [8, 9]. [bmcinfectdis.biomedcentral.com]
Prevention
This prevents the occurrence of actual cancer of the colon, whose outcome could be dreadful for the patient. [link.springer.com]
Additionally, iodoquinol was also prescribed for luminal infection and to prevent colonization. After 3 days of treatment the symptoms, including bloody stool and fever, had resolved. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
