Presentation
METHODS: The author conducted a search of the literature using Medline (Ovid, 1946-present) and PubMed (1966-2013) for English-language studies that included the following search terms: 'testosterone' or 'androgen' combined with 'women', 'therapy' or [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
However, the next presentation from CALGB/Alliance (S2-05) showed different results. [bcaction.org]
Post-webinar follow-up: For those who were unable to catch the live show, it is now possible to listen to the entire presentation and watch Dr. Denmeade’s slide presentation if you click here for the Youtube link. [prostatecancerinfolink.net]
Entire Body System
- Virilization
Each of the subjects had male-gender behavior but incomplete virilization. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Androgen-related side effects include virilization, elevated transaminases, blood lipid abnormalities, hepatic tumors, and liver and spleen peliosis. These effects have not been prospectively studied in DC. [bloodjournal.org]
- Congestive Heart Failure
If initial screening reveals evidence of congestive heart failure or valvular or other structural heart disease, an echocardiogram should be obtained. [circ.ahajournals.org]
This may lead to congestive heart failure (the inability of your heart to pump enough blood for your body) if you have heart, liver, or kidney disease. [everydayhealth.com]
heart failure Other: No active peptic ulcer disease No regular use of antacid or H2 blockers No known or predicted achlorhydria No concurrent use of terfenadine, astemizole, omeprazole, or cisapride No second malignancy unless curatively treated No history [clinicaltrials.gov]

- Hirsutism
It is effective for 70% of those with hirsutism. Several different regimes are prescribed with doses ranging from 25 to 200 mg daily. [dermnetnz.org]
Voice change and mild hirsutism were observed in most of the women receiving nandrolone decanoate, and these secondary effects constitute a real disadvantage to its use in females. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
All males reported priapism; females reported hirsutism and hoarseness of voice. In summary, patients with DC and BMF may achieve transfusion-independence when treated with androgens. [bloodjournal.org]
These characteristics are extremely unlikely to develop if dosage is monitored appropriately and if testosterone levels are maintained within the normal range for young adult women of reproductive age aggression or irritability hirsutism – excess hair [betterhealth.vic.gov.au]
- Alopecia

The typical side effects related to the estrogentestosterone preparations are alopecia, acne, and hirsutism, although these are dose and duration dependent and are not common. 34 Controlled studies 32, 35, 48, 51 have found low incidence of deep voice [aafp.org]

Most commonly reported side effects are androgen skin effects (increased sebum secretion, greasy skin and hair, scalp itching, alopecia, hirsutism) (Tables 2 and 3 ). [eje.bioscientifica.com]

Common side effects that are not dangerous to most and may be considered beneficial in some cases may include: Acne Aggressive behavior Oily skin Increased body hair growth Increased sex drive Gynecomastia Hypertension Headache Weight gain Hot flushes [drugdangers.com]
Symptoms included abnormally large genitalia (penis and clitoris), advanced bone age, early puberty and aggressive behavior. Young boys may even develop enlarged breasts. A doctor should be contacted right away if these symptoms occur. [drugwatch.com]
Enlarged genitalia, early development of pubic hair, increased erections or libido, and aggressive behavior are signs and symptoms of early puberty and accidental exposure. [uspharmacist.com]

Common side effects associated with the use of an anti-androgen include: Constipation or diarrhea Nausea Loss of or decrease in appetite Dizziness or headache Swelling of (gynecomastia) or tenderness in the breasts Trouble sleeping Impotence or decrease [prostate-cancer.com]

- Testosterone Increased
One of the studies showed a two-fold increase in heart attacks in those on testosterone who were over the age of 65. The second study showed a connection between testosterone and increased risk of both stroke and heart attack. [drugdangers.com]

Very few side effects were observed, including a tendency for weight increase and an increase in hemoglobin and hematocrit, although these were reversible a few months later (data not shown), thus indicating good patient compliance to the allocated treatment [care.diabetesjournals.org]

The case of a young man with hypogonadism, who was treated for five years withmethyltestosterone and who developed hepatocellular carcinoma, is discussed. He received a course of 5-fluorouracil via the hepatic artery. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Treatment
Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) has been the core treatment of advance-staged disease since the discovery of prostate cancer's androgen dependence in 1941 by Huggins et al. [1] Options for initial medical treatment include gonadotropin-releasing hormone [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Prognosis
Older patients with AML have a poor prognosis, owing in part to low tolerance to intensive chemotherapy regimens. [medpagetoday.com]
A single study demonstrated that androgen priming in a small group of patients (n=85) using chemotherapy regimens that are now outdated altered the prognosis 13. [uroweb.org]

Etiology
The clinical evaluation must include investigations for one or more etiological factors such as hypogonadism, which is found in 5% to 15% of men with osteoporosis. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Prevention
It has been demonstrated that interventions such as hormone therapies may favorably influence some of the pathological conditions in aging men by preventing the preventable and delaying the inevitable. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
