Presentation
All presented with seizures that, with the exception of 2, began in childhood. [utexas.influuent.utsystem.edu]
A 26-year-old man presented with a case of angiocentric glioma manifesting as medically refractory epilepsy. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Entire Body System
- Epilepsy
Angiocentric glioma is a slow-growing or stable tumor frequently presenting with intractable epilepsy. Surgical treatment would be aimed primarily at control of epilepsy. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Abstract Angiocentric glioma has recently been described as a novel epilepsy associated tumor with distinct clinico-pathologic features. [doi.org]
- Swelling
The swelling and mass effect within the pituitary adenoma compresses surrounding structures and results in sudden severe headache, nausea and vomiting, visual defects, oculomotor palsies, and impairment in pituitary function. [epdf.pub]
Gastrointestinal
- Failure to Thrive
There are a variety of symptoms that are associated with EoE, including severe inflammation, food impaction, vomiting, failure to thrive and poor appetite. [larsonscause.com]
Infants with a brain tumor tend to present with large heads and non-specific symptoms of irritability, vomiting, failure to thrive, and regression of developmental milestones. [childrensmn.org]
A 20-month-old child with failure to thrive. A, Axial T2WI shows a massive inhomogeneously hyperintense suprasellar mass with extension into the left temporal lobe. B, Axial T1C+ image shows strong but heterogeneous enhancement. [ajnr.org]
In infants and young children, low-grade astrocytomas presenting in the hypothalamus may result in diencephalic syndrome, which is manifested by failure to thrive in an emaciated, seemingly euphoric child. [cancer.gov]
[…] to thrive, and developmental delay. [epdf.pub]
Eyes
- Visual Impairment
Such children may have little in the way of other neurologic findings, but can have macrocephaly, intermittent lethargy, and visual impairment.[ 3 ] Diagnostic Evaluation The diagnostic evaluation for astrocytoma is often limited to a magnetic resonance [cancer.gov]
Workup
The role of the radiologist, therefore, is of paramount importance in the workup of a child or young adult presenting with seizures, with a supratentorial, predominantly cortical, nonenhancing, T2-hyperintense lesion. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
An algorithmic approach for the workup of metastatic disease to the central nervous system has been outlined by Becher et al. [epdf.pub]
Treatment
Treatment for children is usually different than treatment for adults. (See the PDQ summary on Adult Central Nervous System Tumors Treatment for more information about the treatment of adults.) [northshore.org]
The best treatment for an individual patient takes into account the tumor location, potential symptoms, and potential benefits versus risks of the different treatment options (modalities). [hopkinsmedicine.org]
Surgical treatment would be aimed primarily at control of epilepsy. Complete lesionectomy usually results in postoperative seizure freedom, but the present case shows evidence for associated cortical dysplasia with this tumor entity. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
The book offers an in-depth survey of a range of new technologies and their applications to tumor diagnosis, treatment and therapy assessment. [books.google.com]
Prognosis
This fourteenth volume of the series provides comprehensive, current information on the diagnosis, therapy and prognosis of brain tumors and spinal tumors. [books.google.com]
Both cortical ependymomas and angiocentric monomorphous glioma/angiocentric neuroepithelial tumor appear to be low-grade tumors although their rarity makes accurate prognosis problematic. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Etiology
The exact etiology of angiocentric gliomas remains unclear although some features are similar to ependymomas 1,6. In fact, sometimes, a distinct ependymoma component may co-exist 1. [radiopaedia.org]
Since it has varied etiology, much of which is not known, the treatment is often symptomatic and long term, and progression of the disease to refractory epilepsy is not uncommon. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Epidemiology
Definition / general Superficial cerebrocortical tumour with features of infiltrating astrocytoma and ependymoma Relationship to ependymoma is unclear Epidemiology Primarily children and young adults Wide age range (2 to 70 years, mean 17 years) Affect [pathologyoutlines.com]
Although epidemiological studies do not support a definitive connection between head injury and intracranial glioma 2, there have been a few case reports of post-traumatic gliomas. [medsci.org]
It assures that histopathologically stratified population-based incidence and mortality data become available for epidemiological and oncological studies. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Discussion Although epidemiological studies do not sup-port a definitive connection between head injury and intracranial glioma2, there have been a few case re-ports of post-traumatic gliomas. [123doc.org]
Pathophysiology
Río Hortega wrote papers on the histopathology of carcinomas and of the nervous system in patients with brain tumors (1911a), the pathophysiology of brain tumors (1911b), and abnormalities of nerve tissue and general symptoms of brain tumors ( Río-Hortega [frontiersin.org]
Prevention
QKI is a tumor-suppressor gene that normally functions to prevent cells from becoming malignant. [danafarberbostonchildrens.org]
Patients with angiocentric gliomas could be spared the additional treatments such as radiation or chemotherapy that are aimed at preventing tumor recurrence. [cancer.gov]
As always, accurate pathological diagnosis is important to prevent overtreatment. [path.upmc.edu]
Whatever the underlying mechanism, the result is that administration of steroid prior to biopsy prevents a diagnosis in as many as 50% of cases 14. [radiopaedia.org]
It is pertinent to recognize its histology to prevent overinterpreting this tumor as an infiltrating Grade II glioma. Despite their infiltrating nature, these are slow-growing and gross resection of the tumor is curative. [neurologyindia.com]
