Presentation
The present case report demonstrates the orthodontic treatment of an adult patient who presented with a complex open-bite malocclusion. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
The course of surgical-orthodontic treatment and the results are presented. This treatment is to be followed by correction of vertical maxillary excess after completion of growth. [ijdr.in]
Its effect over the lower incisors made us discard this option since the patient presented lower incisor proclination, a condition that is exacerbated by mandibular propellers. [elsevier.es]
On external examination, patient presented with symmetrical face [Figure 1]. [jidonline.com]
Finally, others require that no incisal contact be present before diagnosing open bite. [scielo.br]
Musculoskeletal
-
Skeletal Dysplasia
Open bite with no underlying skeletal dysplasia is easy to treat and supposed to be self-correcting in many instances.[1,2] However, cases with abnormal vertical growth require special attention and as the patterns of facial growth get established at [apospublications.com]
Horizontal skeletal dysplasias appear to be inherited thus dysplasias in the vertical plane may also be inherited [20]. [heighpubs.org]
-
Muscle Tenderness
Teeth were temporized with the new VDO and during the 2-month trial period, patient was evaluated for muscle tenderness, discomfort of temporomandibular joint, speech, and facial esthetics. [jidonline.com]
Face, Head & Neck
-
Frontal Bossing
The characteristic craniofacial findings include short posterior cranial base, frontal bossing (due to compensatory overgrowth of cranial vault), collapsed midface and a deficient maxilla, commonly contributing to skeletal class III pattern of malocclusion [ijdr.in]
Treatment
The treatment of anterior open bite remains a tough challenge to the clinician; careful diagnosis and timely intervention with proper treatment modalities and appliance selection will improve the treatment outcomes and long-term stability. [tmu.pure.elsevier.com]
Table 1 Pre-, post-, and 3 years after treatment cephalometric data Treatment options The main objective of orthodontic treatment was to eliminate the open-bite while achieving satisfactory smile aesthetics and masticatory function. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Four years after treatment, the occlusion and facial appearance remained stable, and the patient was fully satisfied with the results (Fig. 5). Fig. 5 Patient four years after treatment. [jco-online.com]

Prognosis
Therefore, despite good prognosis, orthodontic treatment was declined by the patient, and prosthodontic rehabilitation was the only treatment option left. [jidonline.com]
The earlier this malocclusion is corrected, the better the prognosis will be, especially when the problem is skeletal. Treatment is usually not necessary until permanent teeth erupt (approximately at the age of 6 year). [intechopen.com]
Therefore, despite good prognosis, orthodontic treatment was not suggested and prosthodontic rehabilitation was the only treatment option left. [ijdr.in]
Favourable prognosis for treatment by orthodontic means alone digit sucking habit is stopped 38. Patients with increased facial proportions frequently require orthognathic surgery to close the open bite 39. [slideshare.net]
Etiology
The etiology of anterior open bite malocclusions is multifactorial and numerous theories have been proposed, including genetic, anatomic and environmental factors. The diagnosis and treatment modalities are variable according to the etiology. [tmu.pure.elsevier.com]

Some dental open bites can be corrected with clear aligner treatment, pending examination and diagnosis to determine etiology of the open bite. [support.clearcorrect.com]

Prevention
TADs are temporary mini-implants used to provide anchorage to prevent tooth movement during orthodontic procedures. [consultqd.clevelandclinic.org]
They must be long to prevent the tongue from positioning itself below them.24 However, such structures are smooth and deliberately allow the tongue to rest on them so that in some cases this may prevent the functional re-education of the tongue. [scielo.br]
Molar Intrusion Mechanics With Skeletal Anchorage • TPA (3-4 mm distant from the palatal mucosa) used to prevent molar tipping during intrusion mechanics with mini- implant placed on the buccal side. [slideshare.net]
The crib is shaped like a horseshoe with metal bars that prevent the thrusting habit. Tongue crib is known to eliminate habits in about 90% of the patients. (citation needed). [en.wikipedia.org]
