Presentation
Giuliano, MD, FACS, presented the 10-year follow-up data, and it really bore out what we already knew in terms of the initial data. [healio.com]
At the end of radiotherapy 27 pts (27%) presented lymphedema, but only 10 cases (10%) seemed to be correlated to radiotherapy. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Lymph nodes present in the armpit are known as axillary lymph nodes. An axillary lymph node dissection is also referred to as axillary node dissection or axillary dissection. [news-medical.net]
The evaluation result was defined as either present or absent (paresthesia). 3. [wjso.biomedcentral.com]
Entire Body System
- Pain
Seven patients with breast carcinoma and post-axillary dissection pain are described. They complained about pain in the axilla, inner side of the upper arm and/or shoulder. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Pain The pain level was evaluated by directly asking the patient about the presence or absence of any arm pain. No pain score was used. The pain response was recorded as present or absent. [wjso.biomedcentral.com]
I had my surgery May 14. 1 anonymous Learning About Breast Cancer I took extra strength Tylenol for the pain, but I really didn't have much pain. As far as the numbness, I still have numbness 3 months later. [beyondtheshock.com]
Blistering, numbness or tingling, pain, redness, warmth or swelling, changes in sensation, difficulty walking, extreme sensitivity to touch, impaired coordination, muscle weakness, nerve pain, pain when walking, and sharp pain that may be worse at night [breast-cancer.ca]
- Swelling
Watch for signs of infection, including redness, swelling, increased heat, or tenderness. Preventing swelling Right after your surgery You may have some mild swelling in your arm right after your surgery. [mskcc.org]
The risk of clinically significant swelling is 5 - 10%. If swelling occurs it may be not be easy to treat may become progressively worse. [thebreastcentre.co.nz]
Patients are encouraged to report any tightness or swelling of the arm to their physicians as soon as symptoms occur to prevent possible long-term suffering. [imaginis.com]
It most often causes swelling of the arm, but it can also affect the breast, chest, and sometimes even the legs. The swelling, caused by an abnormal collection of too much fluid, is called lymphedema. [nationalbreastcancer.org]
Redness or swelling in your leg or groin. You have loose stitches, or your incision comes open. Bright red blood has soaked through the bandage over your incision. You have signs of infection, such as: Increased pain, swelling, warmth, or redness. [myhealth.alberta.ca]
- Pathologist
Multivariate analyses excluded any influence by surgeon or pathologist. However, the chemotherapy dependent histological feature lymphoid depletion was an independent predictive factor for a lower LNY. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
The axillary contents were examined for lymphatic tissue by a pathologist. The endoscopic technique offered easy access to the axilla and clear visualization of the axillary vein, as well as the long thoracic and thoracodorsal nerves. [link.springer.com]

The pathologist checks the nodes under a microscope. Nearly one-third of women with negative lymph nodes based on a physical exam have nodes with cancer found during the pathology exam [ 14 ]. [ww5.komen.org]
Gastrointestinal
- Constipation
Be sure to take your prescribed medications as directed to prevent pain, infection and/or constipation. Call your team with any new or worsening symptoms. There are ways to manage constipation after your surgery. [oncolink.org]
Walking boosts blood flow and helps prevent pneumonia and constipation. Avoid strenuous activities, such as biking, jogging, weightlifting, or aerobic exercise, until your doctor says it is okay. [myhealth.alberta.ca]
Musculoskeletal
- Winged Scapula
Breast reconstruction with prosthesis, even with serratus muscle dissection, does not increase the incidence of winged scapula. CONCLUSION: Winged scapula is not an uncommon incidence after breast cancer surgery. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Neurologic
- Confusion
Serious symptoms that might indicate a life-threatening condition are changes in level of consciousness or alertness such as confusion, delirium, lethargy, hallucinations and delusions, chest pain or pressure, difficulty breathing, garbled or slurred [breast-cancer.ca]
Workup
The problem that has come up in clinical practice is that axillary ultrasound is now a routine part of breast cancer workup, but the original trial didn’t address ultrasound, said senior investigator Rubie Sue Jackson, MD, at the annual meeting of the [mdedge.com]
Treatment
Differences between treatment recommendations were noted and analyzed. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
The current criteria for radiation therapy of pN + status are used to evaluate the treatment of these patients. [oncolex.org]

Prognosis
CONCLUSION: Axillary nodal status, critical in breast cancer staging, affects prognosis and treatment. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Lymph node status is highly related to prognosis. Prognosis is better when cancer has not spread to the lymph nodes (lymph node-negative) [ 13 ]. Learn about lymph node status and breast cancer stage. [ww5.komen.org]
Etiology
[…] arm and axilla, and decreased range of shoulder motion. [2], [3] One of the most common cause of morbidity after ALND is prolonged postoperative axillary drainage and seroma formation. [4] Out of the few studies done, there is no consensus about the etiology [ccij-online.org]
Epidemiology
We used the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database to identify ILC patients who met the ACOSOG Z0011 eligibility criteria. [journals.plos.org]

Prevention
Recommendations for lymphedema prevention may exaggerate the extent of risk attributable to interventions in the ipsilateral arm. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
It is important to prevent lymph leakage during and after mastectomy and to minimize the intensity and duration of the first phase of wound repair to decrease the morbidity due to prolonged axillary drainage. [ccij-online.org]
Preventing Lymphedema It’s important to prevent infection and swelling to reduce your risk for lymphedema. Preventing infection You’re more likely to get lymphedema if you get an infection in your arm on the side of your surgery. [mskcc.org]
