Presentation
Presented is a case of a bladder polyp diagnosed by ultrasound and removed by transurethral resection. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
In the majority of patients with bladder polyps, symptoms are not present in the early stages. However, a common symptom is the presence of blood in the urine. [belmarrahealth.com]
Entire Body System
- Asymptomatic
Symptoms The polyps usually asymptomatic, but they can occasionally bleed and cause presence of blood in urine. Relatively rarely, they may be associated with pain during urination. [health-tutor.com]
[…] urothelium Epidemiology Rare; usually reported in children In adults, male predominance, median age 44 years, range 17-70 years Sites Usually near verumontanum or bladder neck More common in proximal ureter than bladder Clinical features May be incidental / asymptomatic [pathologyoutlines.com]
Although they are usually asymptomatic, they may present as a result of associated symptomatic gallstones, or from cystic duct obstruction due to large adenoma. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
They are generally asymptomatic. Inflammatory polyps These lesions result from chronic inflammation. They extend into the gallbladder lumen by a narrow vascularized stalk. [emedicine.medscape.com]
Other indications of cholecystectomy in gallbladder polyp are: (a) When the size of the polyp is more than 1 cm even if asymptomatic. (b) When gallbladder polyp is associated with gallstone disease. [jiaps.com]
- Surgical Procedure
Standard with any surgical procedure, the patient is asked to sign a consent form after a thorough explanation of the planned procedure. Aftercare As with any surgical procedure, blood pressure and pulse will be monitored. [surgeryencyclopedia.com]
Muscle-invasive cancers most often need to be treated with a major surgical procedure involving either partial or complete removal of the urinary bladder. [bergenurological.com]
Possible Complications of the Procedure All surgical procedures, regardless of complexity or time, can be associated with unforeseen problems. They may be immediate or even quite delayed in presentation. [deltamedix.com]
Also if frozen section shows malignancy after laparoscopic cholecystectomy, an enlarged resection must be considered during the same surgical procedure. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
The unifying clinical feature of the cases was the development of the lesions 3 months or less after a surgical procedure had been performed at the site from which the lesional tissue was obtained. [nature.com]
- Swelling
• Categorized under Disease, Health | Difference Between Tumors and Polyps The word “tumor” is derived from the Latin word for “swelling,” which indicates swelling of any body parts. Swelling indicates one of the cardinal signs of inflammation. [differencebetween.net]
Having indigestion, nausea, heartburn, sharp bladder pains, infections and swelling can indicate bladder polyps. [ehow.com]
Ultrasound images of the swelling showed a cystic fluid containing lesion with a prominent "beak" extending towards the top of the swelling/ lesion. [ultrasound-images.com]
Complications of cystoscopy may include: Infection Bleeding Urinary retention due to irritation and swelling from the procedure Bladder perforation (poking a hole in the bladder with the cystoscope) There may be other risks depending on your specific [hopkinsmedicine.org]
Respiratoric
- Cough
Risk factors include: Childbirth Straining on the toilet to pass bowel motions Obesity Cigarette smoking Chronic (ongoing) coughing. [betterhealth.vic.gov.au]
Gastrointestinal
- Abdominal Pain
Presentation 52 year old male with sharp right upper quadrant abdominal pain. No history of similar kind of pain, no nausea, vomiting or fever. No history of gallstones. On Physical exam, abdomen is soft with tenderness in RUQ. [sonoworld.com]
Typically, gallbladder polyps are not thought of as causes of abdominal pain. [zocdoc.com]
Gallbladder polyps are usually found incidentally when examining the abdomen by ultrasound for other conditions, usually abdominal pain. [ citation needed ] Pathology [ edit ] Most small polyps (less than 1 cm) are not cancerous and may remain unchanged [en.wikipedia.org]
- Suprapubic Pain
The presentation is of a child with intermittent haematuria exacerbated by physical/sports activity associated with or without suprapubic pain. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
●Suprapubic pain is usually a sign of a locally advanced tumor that is either directly invading the perivesical soft tissues and nerves or obstructing the bladder outlet and causing urinary retention. [es.slideshare.net]
Neurologic
- Confusion
I just find this confusing even reading the literature. [nature.com]
English OBJECTIVES: We present a unique case with a ureteral fibroepithelial tumor originating from the ureter, which could be confused with a bladder tumor on ultrasound examination due to its movement in and out of the bladder. [dialnet.unirioja.es]
(A couple of the staff at the office were quite confused to see me there this morning, as I'd just been there myself last week for a 3-month cystoscopy check-up -- which was all clear.) [bladdercancersupport.org]
Urogenital
- Hematuria
Every year or so since then, urinalysis at physicals has shown microscopic hematuria. It was explained to me that some people just have red blood cells in their urine which doesn't amount to anything. [medhelp.org]
Hematuria — The most common presenting symptom is hematuria, which is typically intermittent, gross, painless, and present throughout micturition. (See "Etiology and evaluation of hematuria in adults".) [es.slideshare.net]
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 14-year-old boy presented at the Urology Department of "Elpis" Hospital complaining of painless macroscopic hematuria during the last six months. The patient did not report previous urinary tract disorders. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

- Dysuria
Proteinuria persisted for 20 months and was followed by dysuria and the discovery of an inflammatory polyp of the bladder. The proteinuria decreased 1 month after excision of the polyp, and disappeared during the following year. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
This can very well be appreciated in these images. calculus in female urethra This female patient complained of dysuria for which she underwent routine sonography. [ultrasound-images.com]
CLINICAL PRESENTATION — Patients with bladder cancer classically present with painless hematuria (grossly visible or microscopic), although irritative voiding symptoms (frequency, urgency, dysuria) can be the initial manifestation. [es.slideshare.net]
Signs and symptoms Clinical manifestations of bladder cancer are as follows: Painless gross hematuria - Approximately 80-90% of patients; classic presentation Irritative bladder symptoms (eg, dysuria, urgency, frequency of urination) - 20-30% of patients [emedicine.medscape.com]
Associated symptoms are the usual ones encountered in cases of bladder pathology, such as hematuria, frequency or dysuria. [nature.com]
- Urinary Retention
●Suprapubic pain is usually a sign of a locally advanced tumor that is either directly invading the perivesical soft tissues and nerves or obstructing the bladder outlet and causing urinary retention. [es.slideshare.net]
Complications of cystoscopy may include: Infection Bleeding Urinary retention due to irritation and swelling from the procedure Bladder perforation (poking a hole in the bladder with the cystoscope) There may be other risks depending on your specific [hopkinsmedicine.org]
Urinary Retention: In a male, pressure from the scope can occasionally cause inflammation in large and/or obstructing prostates. It may block the flow of urine and cause retention (inability to urinate or empty the bladder). [deltamedix.com]
Prognosis Untreated bladder cancer produces significant morbidity, including the following: Hematuria Dysuria Irritative urinary symptoms Urinary retention Urinary incontinence Ureteral obstruction Pelvic pain The recurrence rate for superficial TCC of [emedicine.medscape.com]
- Macroscopic Hematuria
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A 14-year-old boy presented at the Urology Department of "Elpis" Hospital complaining of painless macroscopic hematuria during the last six months. The patient did not report previous urinary tract disorders. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Urinary Urgency
Overactive bladder causes a sudden and unstoppable need to urinate ( urinary urgency ), even though the bladder may only contain a small amount of urine. Although it can happen at any age, overactive bladder is especially common in older adults. [betterhealth.vic.gov.au]
Workup
The workup is directed at exclusion of malignancy. 90% of bladder carcinomas are transitional cell carcinoma (TCC), 75% of which are papillary, 25% are infiltrative. [med-ed.virginia.edu]
No further workups were done at that time. Every year or so since then, urinalysis at physicals has shown microscopic hematuria. It was explained to me that some people just have red blood cells in their urine which doesn't amount to anything. [medhelp.org]
Gallbladder cancer is often discovered incidentally during a workup for gallstone disease, and about 50% of gallbladder cancer cases are diagnosed incidentally in cholecystectomy specimens. [emedicine.medscape.com]
Colonoscopy
- Polyps
The most common histopathological findings included cholesterol polyps, adenomatous polyps, and inflammatory polyps. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Treatment
Excellent treatments exist for all stages of bladder cancer, and thus timely evaluation and treatment are important. [everydayhealth.com]
Treatment is surgical with good long-term prognosis. Not much is written in literature about benign fibroepithelial bladder polyp. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Latest treatment for bladder cancer in New York City with offices in Manhattan midtown and UES and Brooklyn. Modern options including videocystoscopy, in-office biopsy, BCG and mytomycin C treatment. [newyorkurologyspecialists.com]
If the biopsy comes back stating that the polyp is cancerous, cancer treatment will be offered. As said, bladder polyp surgery is generally performed through a cystoscope and bladder polyp treatment is only available if the polyps are malignant. [healthadel.com]
Prognosis
Treatment is surgical with good long-term prognosis. Not much is written in literature about benign fibroepithelial bladder polyp. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
The prognosis is poor, and the majority of patients have unresectable disease. [hpblondon.com]
It is important to distinguish these polyps from urothelial cancers, since these two entities are different in treatment and prognosis, although similar in symptoms and imaging procedures. [dialnet.unirioja.es]
Though it is more prevalent in men, studies have shown that women are more likely to present more advanced tumors and have a worse prognosis than men at almost every stage of the disease. [bcan.org]

Etiology
The etiology was inadvertent thermal injury of the ureteroneocystostomy incurred during the procedure. After attempted percutaneous management, definitive open repair resulted in a return of allograft function to baseline. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Prevention
Prevention Since having benign bladder polyps is strongly associated with smoking, it is best to reduce or quit smoking completely to prevent recurrence. [ehow.com]
Not smoking is the most important thing a person can to do help prevent bladder cancer. If you already have bladder cancer, you should still stop smoking because bladder cancer often recurs, and smoking could bring about a recurrence. [news-medical.net]
Sometimes, it is necessary to remove them only to confirm that they are non cancerous or to prevent the disconcerting but not strictly dangerous symptoms associated with these polyps, i.e. painful urine or blood in urine. [womenhealthzone.com]
Despite the fact that no skin incisions were used, the area around the bladder cutting is raw and is covered with a scab to promote healing and prevent bleeding. [urologyassociates.net]
