Presentation
Most of the cases described in the literature 3 4 8 9 and all cases evaluated in the present study are female. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Topic Images summary Brachymetatarsia is a rare congenital condition caused by premature epiphyseal closure of the metatarsals that presents with shortening of one or more metatarsals. [orthobullets.com]
Six cases were evaluated, two of them presented bilateral brachymetatarsia. All patients were women, and had brachymetatarsia of the 4th metatarsal. The average age was 14 years. [pesquisa.bvsalud.org]
Entire Body System
- Fatigue
The shortening of any of them leads to overload and laxity of the transverse ligament, causing inadequate forefoot contact, excessive pressure, and impaired muscle function, resulting in pain and fatigue in the leg and the foot. 13 Pain is considered [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Musculoskeletal
- Joint Dislocation
One patient progressed to metatarsophalangeal joint dislocation, and another one to metatarsophalangeal joint flexion. No neurovascular complications were observed. [pesquisa.bvsalud.org]
Stretching speeds > 1 mm/day may result in pain, in excessive soft tissue tension, and in joint dislocation 16 Gradual stretching in a single stage reduces the risk of neurovascular involvement, as it generates lower soft tissue tension. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Fracture
[…] joint stiffness. 14 Masada et al. 19 report a higher number of postoperative complications when stretching is > 40% of the original length of the metatarsus, citing excessive stretching, joint stiffness, loss of alignment, delayed consolidation, and fracture [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Treatment
The authors have conducted the surgical treatment (lengthening the shortened metatarsal bones) in 18 female patients (28 feet, 32 metatarsal bones) and determined the optimal method of surgical correction. [journal.rniito.org]
Treatment is observation with shoe modifications for mild cases. Surgical metatarsal lengthening may be indicated in patients with persistent pain with shoe wearing. [orthobullets.com]

Etiology

Surgical treatment is an alternative in the search for a satisfactory aesthetic and functional result. 3 4 The etiology of the pathology is not yet fully understood. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

The following epidemiological variables were evaluated: age, gender, reason for consultation (aesthetic deformity, metatarsalgia, difficulty to put on shoes), affected side, affected metatarsal, presence of pain or callosity (before and after surgery) [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
