Most patients presenting with chlamydial conjunctivitis will have an associated genital infection (of which they may be unaware). It is important that these patients are referred to genito-urinary medicine clinics for a full STI investigation. [college-optometrists.org]
Two case reports of patients with laboratory-confirmed inclusion conjunctivitis will be presented. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Often, symptoms have been present for many weeks or months and have not responded to topical antibiotics. [merckmanuals.com]

- Infertility
Infertility and ectopic pregnancy are complications of chlamydial pelvic inflammatory disease. A substantial number of studies suggest that maternal C. trachomatis infection in pregnancy is associated with premature delivery. [en.vircell.com]
More than 80 per cent of people with chlamydia show no symptoms but regular testing can lead to diagnosis and treatment with single dose antibiotics, to help prevent progression to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and infertility in women. [optometry.org.au]
Untreated chlamydial infection can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and scarring of fallopian tubes in women, causing infertility/sterility or ectopic pregnancy. Chlamydial salpingitis and tubo-ovarian abscess may rupture and lead to peritonitis. [aimu.us]
If untreated, a chlamydial infection can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and scarring of fallopian tubes in women, causing infertility or ectopic pregnancies. In males, urethritis may result. [healthofchildren.com]
If left untreated, sterility/infertility can develop in both sexes. [reviewofoptometry.com]
- Falling
Thus, genital TRIC isolates often fall within certain antigenic groups, whereas. ocular TRIC isolates from endemic trachoma areas often fall within other groups. [notesread.com]
Forty-six percent of new cases of chlamydia fall within this group. Up to 10 percent of pregnant women harbor the chlamydial parasite. Twenty-five percent of those men with chlamydia infections are not aware of their infection. [healthofchildren.com]

- Severe Pain
Chemical Irritant or toxic conjunctivitis is irritable or painful, but discharge and itch are usually absent. This is the only group in which severe pain and discomfort may occur and shows primarily a marked redness of the eye. [mcdougaleyes.com]
Red flags : Severe pain/photophobia/decreased acuity. Refer ASAP if any of above present, worse after 1-2d of treatment or no better after 7d. Exception: viral conjunctivitis symptoms may worsen first 3-5d, reassure if no red flags. [hopkinsguides.com]
Immune System
- Preauricular Adenopathy
Palpation of the preauricular nodes showed adenopathy on the left side only. The patient denied any vaginal irritation or discharge. [clspectrum.com]
Preauricular adenopathy is common, along with conjunctival membranes or pseudomembranes. Patients may have URI symptoms prior to the onset of the conjunctivitis. Treatment is supportive, with cool compresses and artificial tears. [hawaii.edu]
Preauricular adenopathy is common. Constitutional sx include fever, malaise, nausea and vomiting. [hopkinsguides.com]
Respiratoric
- Rhinitis
The personal or family history is often positive for other atopic conditions, such as allergic rhinitis, asthma or eczema. [aafp.org]
Other accompanying symptoms in the infant include a cough and rhinitis. When to call the doctor Any red eye, with or without discharge, should be examined by an appropriate healthcare practitioner. [healthofchildren.com]
- Nasal Congestion
Cough and nasal congestion without discharge are common, although discharge can be thick. Onset is insidious and characteristic features include a staccato cough, tachypnea. Rales is common upon auscultation, but wheezing is not. [pedclerk.bsd.uchicago.edu]
Skin
- Flushing
The following "red flags" point to other more serious diagnoses, such as keratitis ( inflammation of the cornea ), iritis, or angle closure glaucoma : Changes in visual acuity Ciliary flush — a pattern of injection in which the redness is most pronounced [dermnetnz.org]

Diagnostic clues include a history of periodic facial flushing (usually in response to the consumption of certain foods or alcohol) and the presence of erythematous and telangiectatic skin changes on the forehead, cheeks, chin and nose. [aafp.org]
- Erythema
Signs include edema, erythema, warmth and pain of the eyelid. Visual acuity, eye motility, and pupillary reaction are normal. The conjunctiva can be injected, and there should be very little pain on eye movement. [hawaii.edu]
Conjunctival erythema, edema, petechiae, chemosis. Thick, globular, purulent white, yellow or green d/c at lid margin/eye corners. This distinguishes from viral conjunctivitis. Eye stuck shut often upon awakening. Preauricular LN: usually absent. [hopkinsguides.com]
Signs of this conjunctival condition include flaky debris, erythema and warmth along the lid margins, as well as eyelash loss and bulbar conjunctival injection. [aafp.org]
Eyes
- Blepharitis
Severe, chronic blepharitis and severe eczema: Initial treatment of blepharitis should consist of lid hygiene and ointments in conjunction with warm compresses. [healio.com]
Mild itching can also be a feature of blepharitis, dry eyes and, occasionally, bacterial or viral conjunctivitis. [aafp.org]
People who do not practice safe sex have a high risk Certain eye disorders such as dryness of the eye, blepharitis and structural abnormalities can predispose a person to this infection. [stdaware.com]
