Presentation
Abstract This paper presents a brief review of chlamydial pneumonia in infancy and indirect evidence that the incidence of this disease may be high in developing countries. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
~ Materials and Methods A total of 50 infants, aged between 4 weeks and 24 weeks, presenting with either difficulty in breathing or cough with tachypnoea were included in the study. [ijmm.org]
Entire Body System
- Fever
Fever and cough were the most common presenting symptoms. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
C. trachomatis pneumonia was associated with the age group of 4-12 weeks, cough of more than 7 days duration, presence of conjunctivitis, milder grade of pneumonia and absence of fever. [ijmm.org]

- Chlamydia Trachomatis
Chlamydia trachomatis was isolated from the respiratory tract of all infants. They had protracted respiratory problems despite eradication of the organism by chemotherapy. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

The study showed a high prevalence of C. trachomatis pneumonia in infants. How to cite this article: Chawla R, Bhalla P, Sachdev H P. A pilot study of chlamydia trachomatis pneumonia in infants. [ijmm.org]
Treatment
All infants stopped shedding chlamydiae soon after treatment was started. After treatment, three of the 25 infants tested again became culture positive (but did not have clinical relapse). All infants improved clinically. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Etiology
Chlamydial cultures of nasopharyngeal secretions or tracheal aspirates, and determination of antichlamydial antibody titers in serum are indicated in establishing the etiology. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Studies using the most complete and reliable diagnostic methods could also identify an etiological agent in only about 50% cases of childhood pneumonias.[12] While in the present study bacterial aetiology could be established in 18 (36%) cases. [ijmm.org]
Prevention
Chlamydial pneumonia of infancy is a preventable disease if genital infection in pregnant women is diagnosed and treated. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
