Presentation
Three patients are presented in whom life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias dominated the clinical presentation. These arrhythmias were resistant to standard antiarrhythmic therapy. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Fever
Aspirin also reduces fever. Rectal aspirin is used to reduce pain, inflammation, and fever. Aspirin is also used to treat the symptoms of arthritis and rheumatic fever. doxycycline (Vibramycin) Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic. [emedicinehealth.com]
Check with your physician if you are taking central nervous system depressants like antihistamines, hay fever medicines, sedatives, narcotics, anesthetics, barbiturates or muscle relaxants. The habit-forming potential is moderate to high. [psyweb.com]
Fever or chills. Sore throat. Very bad dizziness or passing out. A heartbeat that does not feel normal. This drug may cause very bad and sometimes deadly breathing problems. [mskcc.org]

Hypoxemia
Ventilator care in premature infants with hyaline membrane disease (HMD) may be complicated by episodes of irritability and "fighting" the respirator, resulting in significant hypoxemia. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Indeed the chloral hydrate-induced hypoxemia which must occur during euthanasia as respiration becomes depressed 1, may compromise the experimental aims in terms of measuring protein and messenger ribonucleic acid levels of an activity-related protein [doi.org]

Hypothermia
Overdosage Signs of overdose include increasing confusion, severe drowsiness leading to coma, hypotension, hypothermia and respiratory depression. [apps.who.int]
These symptoms include: Hypothermia Cardiac arrhythmias Respiratory depression Miosis (severe eye pupil contraction), vomiting, areflexia (nerve problems) and muscle flaccidity (bad muscle tone) could occur also. [addictionsearch.com]
They may include: hypothermia ; pinpoint pupils; blood pressure falls; comatose state; slow, or rapid and shallow breathing. Gastric irritation may result in vomiting and even gastric necrosis. [rxlist.com]

Crying
There were no statistically significant differences between sessions and groups in the evaluation of body movement, crying and vital signs. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Instead, he became agitated, crying and thrashing around. He was beginning to display signs of a paradoxical reaction to the chloral hydrate. [dx.doi.org]
Skin
-
Skin Patch
METHODS: TCE and its main metabolites chloral hydrate (CH), trichloroethanol (TCOH) and trichloroacetic acid (TCA) were used as allergens at different concentrations in skin patch tests. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Altered Mental Status
Management includes consideration of gastrointestinal decontamination, supportive care for altered mental status and treatment of arrhythmias. [dx.doi.org]
-
Stupor
Symptoms of overdose may include deep stupor, dilation of blood vessels, fall in blood pressure and body temperature, and slowed respiration. In a severe overdose, death usually occurs within 5 to 10 hours. [britannica.com]

Epileptiform Activity
OBJECTIVE: The sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) can reveal certain epileptiform activity patterns and facilitate localization of the focus. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Other ECG Findings
-
Ischemic Changes
Repeated electrocardiographic examination was consistent with ischemic changes appearing on day 3. They were associated with segmental abnormal left ventricular wall motion by echocardiography. A coronary angiogram was performed and was normal. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Treatment
AIM: We hypothesised that chloral hydrate is safe and effective for sedation during dental treatments for children with mild asthma. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Etiology
Oxygen derived species such as superoxide radical, hydrogen peroxide, singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radical are well known to be cytotoxic and have been implicated in the etiology of a wide array of human diseases, including cancer. [doi.org]
Epidemiology
[…] of trichloroethylene is due to a reactive intermediate epoxide metabolite rather than chloral hydrate. 3 As is the case for most chemical carcinogens, trichloroethylene is carcinogenic in some laboratory animal species but not in others. 4 Multiple epidemiologic [pediatrics.aappublications.org]
Prevention
The repeated determination of serum TCE levels prevented a technically difficult and risky hemodialysis in this very young patient. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Meperidine also has the characteristics of providing analgesia (pain control) to increase sedative and calming effects to prevent arousal when stimulated with the dental drill or injection of novocaine. [carypediatricdentistry.com]
Alendronate slows bone loss while increasing bone mass, which may prevent bone fractures. Alendronate is used to treat or prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis and steroid-induced osteoporosis. [emedicinehealth.com]
To prevent excessive hypoprothrombinemia a reduction in warfarin requirement should be anticipated when chloral hydrate therapy is begun. [dx.doi.org]
