Presentation
Case report Patient data A 61-year-old patient with no significant medical history self-presented for the appearance of a large tumor which was observed within the last eight months and which presented a rapid growth within the last three months. [spandidos-publications.com]
Patients mostly present with a painless, slowly growing lump. Cytogenetic aberrations have been reported associated with a translation between chromosome 11 and 16. [jbsr.be]
ABSTRACT Lipomas are benign neoplasms of adipose tissue presenting several histologic variants, which can be rarely found in the oral cavity. We present a case of a 62-year-old woman with a submucous nodule located in the tongue. [scienceopen.com]
Lipocytes are also present [3] [6]. NO/mild pleomorphism and rare mitosis are accepted [3] [6]. Some small cells with lacunae-like zone are present [3] [6]. [ijcripathology.com]
Entire Body System
- Weakness
Focal weak positivity for S-100 protein was noted. Principal considerations in the histopathologic differential diagnosis included hibernoma, myxoid liposarcoma, and extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma (chordoid sarcoma). [oooojournal.net]
The lesion showed delayed and weak enhancement at the periphery of the mass (Figure 3, subtraction image, arrows). The diagnosis of a chondroid lipoma was suggested. Because a malignant lesion could not be excluded, the lesion was resected. [jbsr.be]

There was no complaint of lower limb weakness. There was no history of trauma and the patient was otherwise in good health. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Soft Tissue Mass
Radiographs revealed a bulged soft tissue mass in anterior compartment of right lower thigh showing predominantly radiolucent density with multiple chondroid matrix of calcification. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
MRI confirmed a heterogeneous soft tissue mass located in the adductor pollicis muscle. On the palmar side, the lesion was of high signal intensity on T1-weighted images (WI) in keeping with fat (Figure 2A, arrow). [jbsr.be]
It presented as a painless, slowly growing, superficial or deeply seated soft tissue mass [3] [6]. Grossly, it is a well-circumscribed lobulated tan-yellow mass with a size range of 2–7 cm [3] [6]. [ijcripathology.com]
- Pathologist
Lipomatous tumors of soft tissues represent one of the most frequently diagnosed neoplastic growths reported by the pathologist. [medscape.com]
So, the pathologist should be aware of this entity when he/she comes across such cases. [ijcripathology.com]
Indian J Pathol Microbiol 2009;52:284-5 Sir, Tumors of adipose tissue are among some of the most common soft tissue tumors encountered by the pathologist. Most of these are conventional lipomas and pose no diagnostic confusion. [ijpmonline.org]

- Loss of Appetite
There was no decrease in weight or loss of appetite. On physical examination, there was a non-tender mass in the upper part of the right thigh. This mass was firm, deeply-seated, roughly oval, and not pulsated or fixed to the skin. [ijcripathology.com]

- Suggestibility
The diagnosis of a chondroid lipoma was suggested. Because a malignant lesion could not be excluded, the lesion was resected. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a chondroid lipoma. [jbsr.be]
Histologic features that suggest chondroid lipoma include a fibrous capsule with nests and cords of uni and multivacuolated round mature adipocytes within an extracellular myxohyaline matrix that has a cartilaginous appearance. [radiopaedia.org]
According to these MRI findings, diagnosis of liposarcoma was initially suggested. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Histochemical and immunohistochemical studies have suggested that the chondroid portions of these lesions are intrinsically cartilaginous However, ultrastructural features have been said to more closely approximate those of conventional chordoma. [pat.uninet.edu]
Neurologic
- Confusion
These lesions can be diagnostically confusing as they may mimic other fat-containing neoplasms, including more aggressive lesions such as myxoid liposarcoma and extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma 1. [radiopaedia.org]
If a chordoma contains large numbers of cells with single cytoplasmic vacuoles, it may be confused with a metastatic signet ring adenocarcinoma. [pat.uninet.edu]
Histologically, it comprises nests and cords of rounded cells with granular eosinophilic or multivacuolated, lipid-containing cytoplasm within prominent myxohyaline stroma and may be morphologically confused with some sarcomas. [pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Most of these are conventional lipomas and pose no diagnostic confusion. [ijpmonline.org]
The obscure etiology of osseous/chondroid differentiaion led to confusion of the name. [hindawi.com]
- Irritability
Chronic irritation, trauma, and spontaneous development have been mentioned. [hindawi.com]
Treatment
The spectrum ranges from the benign solitary lipoma through to the malignant liposarcoma.[1] An accurate diagnosis is essential in guiding the treatment plan; however, histologic examination is not always conclusive, and reliance may be placed on immunohistochemical [medscape.com]
It is characterised by showing a non-aggressive behaviour that does not require radical treatment. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Treatment and prognosis Chondroid lipomas are being circumscribed masses and surgical excision is therefore usually curative 10. Malignant transformation and metastases are not reported. [radiopaedia.org]
Treatment and Prognosis: Local recurrences almost invariably develop and account for the very high long-term mortality. Unlike conventional chordoma, however, survival is markedly prolonged. [pat.uninet.edu]
Treatment consists of conservative surgical excision, and while recurrence is possible, it has been noted in <10% of reported cases. [scienceopen.com]

Etiology
The obscure etiology of osseous/chondroid differentiaion led to confusion of the name. [hindawi.com]
The etiology of chondroid lipoma remains unknown, but it appears genetically distinct, with a reciprocal t(11;16)(q13;p13) translocation identified in an increasing number of cases. [pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

16)(q13;p13) translocation (Histopathology 2013;62:925) Surgical excision is curative with rare recurrence Terminology Extraskeletal chondroma with lipoblast-like cells (first described terminology, subsequently disapproved) (Hum Pathol 1986;17:1285) Epidemiology [pathologyoutlines.com]

Prevention
In order to prevent the risk of local recurrence, complete excision of the lesion en bloc with the adjacent capsule is mandatory (4,15). [spandidos-publications.com]
