Presentation

We present two cases of oral myiasis caused by Cochliomyia hominivorax spp. Ivermectin is an extremely effective semi-synthetic macrolides, in the treatment of this condition. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

In another recent report, Ribeiro et al. [3] presented a case report of a 97-year-old male, that had intestinal, dermatological, and heart disease that presented a lesion in posterior maxilla and sinus cavity infected by Cochliomyia hominivorax. [hindawi.com]

Entire Body System

  • Veterinarian

Abstract The geographical distribution and seasonality of the New World screwworm (NWS), Cochliomyia hominivorax Coquerel (Diptera: Calliphoridae), were monitored through the use of sentinel animals as part of a co-ordinated programme involving veterinarians [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Articles are frequently published to remind livestock owners and practicing veterinarians to report any suspected case of screwworm immediately. 2. [fao.org]

  • Hunting

The eradication of this parasite in the United States has made it possible to diversify rural production by raising wildlife for the market; hunting is also becoming an important economic activity in the southern United States. 3. [fao.org]

  • Fever

She presented with fever associated with abscessed scalp lesions containing exposed larvae. Severe pediculosis was also observed. [scielo.org.co]

Fever, vomiting and cramps, nausea, and sometimes toxemia are recognized symptoms. The illness is usually self-limited and runs its course in 4-7 days. [web.archive.org]

  • Pain

This situation is severely life-threatening to the patient, in addition to causing pain and tissue destruction [1, 3]. [hindawi.com]

However, at the end of the third week, larvae can become extremely painful. 2-3. [web.archive.org]

  • Infertility

Through SIT, scientists mass quantities of insects in the laboratory, sterilize them via radiation, and release them in infested areas, where the sterilized males mate with native females to produce infertile eggs. [worldfoodprize.org]

Cardiovascular

  • Heart Disease

In another recent report, Ribeiro et al. [3] presented a case report of a 97-year-old male, that had intestinal, dermatological, and heart disease that presented a lesion in posterior maxilla and sinus cavity infected by Cochliomyia hominivorax. [hindawi.com]

Jaw & Teeth

  • Periodontitis

We report a rare case of periodontal myiasis by New World screwworm Cochliomyia hominivorax, an obligatory larval parasite, in a 66-year-old woman. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

The myiasis occurred in the anterior upper jaw associated with a pre-existent generalised periodontitis. About 40 larvae were removed from the lesion. [bjoms.com]

Halitosis and periodontal disease may have increased the risk of oral myiasis, as reported by other authors [6, 8]. [hindawi.com]

  • Poor Oral Hygiene

Introduction Oral myiasis is a rare condition that is associated with poor oral hygiene, mouth breathing, neurologic deficiency, cerebral palsy, periodontal disease, incompetent lip, anterior open bite, mouth breathing, and debilitated geriatric and alcoholic [hindawi.com]

  • Anterior Open Bite

Introduction Oral myiasis is a rare condition that is associated with poor oral hygiene, mouth breathing, neurologic deficiency, cerebral palsy, periodontal disease, incompetent lip, anterior open bite, mouth breathing, and debilitated geriatric and alcoholic [hindawi.com]

Skin

  • Ulcer

The patient attended the hospital of the capital city of Tucumán Province for a consultation concerning an ulcer in his right foot, where the larval specimens were found. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

In the maxilla, a 2 cm wide, circular, ulcerated lesion with maggots was observed in the left canine region (Figure 1). Furthermore, the jaw on the same side contained a 6 cm, oval, ulcerated lesion full of maggots (Figure 2). [hindawi.com]

Musca sorbens adults feed on mucous secretions around the faces and eyes of humans, and are also attracted to wounds and ulcers. [web.archive.org]

Psychiatrical

  • Suggestibility

We suggest that ivermectin plays an important role in the treatment of severe cases of myiasis. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Phylogenetic analysis of New World screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax, suggests genetic isolation of some Caribbean island populations following colonization from South America 1 2 J. R. [doi.org]

This suggests that the consensus TRA/TRA2 site in blowflies may be longer than the 13 bp motif identified previously [2]. [journals.plos.org]

Treatment

Healing was uneventful in the six cases presented, and no undesirable reactions were observed throughout the period of treatment. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Etiology

Myiasis is usually caused by flies of the Calliphoridae family, and Cochliomyia hominivorax is the etiological agent most frequently found in myiasis. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Because of the aggressiveness of its larvae, it is important to reach a specific etiological diagnosis. [pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Epidemiology

Epidemiological, clinical, analytical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and follow-up data were collected from clinical files. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Keywords : Cochliomyia hominivorax; myiasis; epidemiologic surveillance; South America. [scielo.org.co]

A glossary of entomological and epidemiological terms is included, along with a list of commonly used insecticides and their trade names. [books.google.it]

Prevention

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cannot attest to the accuracy of a non-federal website. [doi.org]

Preventive measures may not always be successful. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

In this barrier, sterile flies are continuously released to prevent reinfestation from South America. In 1988, the fly established in Libya, North Africa and was eradicated from there by 1991. [wiki.pestinfo.org]
