Congenital Malformation of the Ear
Congenital Ear Deformity

Presentation

Abstract We present a congenital deformity of the right ear, characterized by absence of the central portion of the helix and antihelix. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

It is a rare tumour which presents with unilateral sensorineural hearing loss. [elsevier.es]

Here too as in a lop ear deficiencies of the middle ear may or may not be present (Fig. 15-16). e. Cryptotia: Almost the whole of the cartilaginous frame of the ear is developed and present but is contained within a pocket of skin. [shortnotesinplasticsurgery.wordpress.com]

On Admission POA Help "Present On Admission" is defined as present at the time the order for inpatient admission occurs — conditions that develop during an outpatient encounter, including emergency department, observation, or outpatient surgery, are [icd10data.com]

They are present in up to 1.5% of the population and, in isolation, usually present with no functional abnormality. They can be part of a syndrome (eg, Treacher Collins' syndrome or Goldenhar's syndrome). [patient.info]

Treatment

In eight cases, treatment had to be stopped because of an allergic reaction to the adhesive tape used. [sciencedaily.com]

Treatments Treatments Surgery is the typical treatment for congenital ear anomalies. [rileychildrens.org]

Nonsurgical treatment At The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, we believe every child with an ear deformity at birth should be examined by an experienced multidisciplinary team to consider if nonsurgical treatment could improve the appearance of the [chop.edu]

In case of surgical treatment for unilateral ear involvement, this should ideally be delayed until 10 years of age, adolescence, or even adulthood, so that the patient can have an active role in treatment decisions.10 In cases of bilateral hearing loss [scielo.br]

Some may not require any treatment if hearing is normal. Potential treatments include ear moldings, reconstructive surgery to restore the shape of the ear, hearing aids (and/or cochlear implants), and early speech evaluation and therapy. [nicklauschildrens.org]

Etiology

There is an increasing number of literature reports on synchronous occurrence of gastrointestinal stromal tumors and another malignancy of distinct etiology and evolution. [content.sciendo.com]

CONCLUSION: The simple, century-old Gavello's procedure is still of great value for reconstruction of earlobe defects of diverse etiology. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Although the etiology of this disease is not fully understood, autosomal recessive or dominant inheritance is possible. The disease occurs as sporadic cases. Male:female ratio for the Goldenhar's syndrome is 2:1. [academic.oup.com]

Palavras-Chave: Orelha média; Perda auditiva; Anormalidades congênitas Introduction In children, conductive hearing loss is usually acquired, and otitis media with effusion is the most common etiology. [scielo.br]

Similar triad of congenital malformation comprising anotia, facial paralysis, and congenital heart disease was described by Pearl in two girls without any obvious etiology. [4] One girl had right-sided facial paralysis and the absent pinna with blind [indianjotol.org]

Epidemiology

Epidemiologic characteristics of anotia and microtia in California, 1989-1997. Birth Defects Research (Part A): Clinical and Molecular Teratology. 2004;70:472-475. National Birth Defects Prevention Network. [cdc.gov]

Some, in particular, include high cerebrospinal fluid pressure, defective endosteum, large quantities of endolymph, and decreased cochlear vascular supply.[11] Clinical Significance External ear: A few studies exist on epidemiological factors of anotia [statpearls.com]

Epidemiology Frequency No statistics are available on the prevalence of protruding or prominent ears. Heredity plays a role in many deformities of the external ear. [emedicine.medscape.com]

EPIDEMIOLOGY • Microtia and congential auditory atresia occur in approximately 1 in every 6000 live births. • These deformities commonly occur unilaterally, more so on the right side. • Men are affected thrice as common as women. [slideshare.net]

Pathophysiology

Because there are several anomalies, there are many associated hypothesized pathophysiologies. [statpearls.com]

Pathophysiology Features seen in the patient with prominent or protruding ears (in decreasing order of importance) include the following: Absent antihelical fold Obtuse scaphoconchal angle Increased distance of helical rim to scalp Deep conchal bowl Address [emedicine.medscape.com]

Prevention

CDC funds the Centers for Birth Defects Research and Prevention, which collaborate on large studies such as the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS; births 1997-2011) and the Birth Defects Study To Evaluate Pregnancy exposureS (BD-STEPS; began [cdc.gov]

Molding does not work on every child but, if successful, can prevent the need for surgery in the future. We offer full spectrum of treatment for congenital ear deformities. [texaschildrens.org]
