Presentation
A chronic mixed inflammatory cell infiltrate containing some eosinophils was present. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
It is currently a rare condition, but its detection is important for clinicians because it presents a number of specific characteristics. [coek.info]
We present 3 cases of multiple small bowel strictures in which the affected segments were studied with perioperative photoplethysmography, in vivo specimen angiography and pathology. [karger.com]
Thickening, inflammatory infiltrate, thrombosis, and endophlebitis were present on venules in four cases. [gut.bmj.com]
[…] the case of a 45-year-old male smoker, who presented with intermittent abdominal pain related to intake since one year previously. [reed.es]
Entire Body System
- Pain
Abstract We studied a patient with edema secondary to protein losing enteropathy, and recurrent bouts of bloating and abdominal pain secondary to intestinal subocclusion episodes. [pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Abdominal pain and vomiting resolved in less than one month. The two steroid treated patients with extradigestive symptoms—that is, joint pain and symmetrical sensory neuropathy of the legs—also showed resolution of these symptoms. [gut.bmj.com]
In Western cases, reports indicate that men are more frequently affected and that there are a greater number of intestinal stenoses and cases of abdominal pain. [coek.info]
CASE HISTORY A woman of 66 was referred for investigation of colicky lower abdominal pain, iron deficiency anaemia and weight loss of 7 kg in the previous nine months. For much longer she had suffered from constipation. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

- Inflammation
CONCLUSIONS CMUSE is an independent entity characterised by steroid sensitive inflammation of the small bowel which often recurs after surgery. [gut.bmj.com]
Small-bowel barium enema showing two discrete smooth strictures with proximal hold-up Haematoxylin–eosin stain showing inflammation limited to the mucosa and submucosa (double arrow) and not affecting the muscularis propria. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Anemia
The general laboratory study showed only hypoproteinemia and iron deficiency anemia. [coek.info]

- Fatigue
The predominant symptoms are related to anemia, fatigue, weight loss and/or delayed growth, abdominal pain, bowel obstruction conditions and peripheral edema as manifestations of hypoalbuminemia and protein-losing enteropathy. [coek.info]

Other medical treatments were azathioprine, methotrexate. and mesalamine but none caused remission of abdominal pain. [gut.bmj.com]

- Recurrent Abdominal Pain
Abstract We studied a patient with edema secondary to protein losing enteropathy, and recurrent bouts of bloating and abdominal pain secondary to intestinal subocclusion episodes. [pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
[…] a patient with edema secondary to protein losing enteropathy, and recurrent bouts of bloating and abdominal pain secondary to intestinal subocclusion episodes. [coek.info]
- Vomiting
All had bouts of abdominal pain, vomiting, and subocclusion. Weight loss in two months was more than 4 kg in all patients. [gut.bmj.com]
Skin
- Ulcer
There were three well demarcated ulcerated areas causing separate stenoses. The ulcers were superficial, affecting the mucosa and submucosa, and did not extend to the underlying tissues (Figure 2). [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

- Erythema
The involvement of other gastrointestinal areas and extraintestinal manifestations (uveitis, episcleritis, erythema nodosum, pyoderma gangrenosum, etc.) are more typical of CD. [coek.info]
Treatment
Number of laparotomies and outcome, number of strictures, corticosteroid treatment, corticosteroid sensitivity, and other attempted treatments were documented. [gut.bmj.com]

The aim of this study was to describe the clinical spectrum of CMUSE, to determine the origin and pathophysiology of the disease, and to propose a treatment strategy. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Prognosis
Treatment and prognosis Authorship Medical therapy (corticosteroids and immunosuppressants) is seldom effective1,7,28,29 in patients affected by this disease. [coek.info]
Etiology
Etiology Until a few years ago, data were scarce on the origin and pathogenesis of CMUSE. [coek.info]
Pathophysiology
The aim of this study was to describe the clinical spectrum of CMUSE, to determine the origin and pathophysiology of the disease, and to propose a treatment strategy. [gut.bmj.com]

Prevention
Balloon dilatation could be a good option to prevent extended resection of the small bowel. Corticosteroid therapy may prevent recurrent laparotomies but often leads to dependence. [gut.bmj.com]
