Presentation
The present report discusses the clinical indications that can support the administration of deferoxamine for iron intoxication in pregnancy and discusses the benefits and risks of its usage. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Entire Body System
- Localized Pain
pain, irritation, burning, swelling, and induration may occur at the injection site following IV or sub-Q administration. 118 b Adverse ocular and otic effects (see Warnings), abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, leg cramps, tachycardia, [web.archive.org]
- Gangrene
A 49-year-old woman undergoing long-term hemodialysis and treated with deferoxamine (DFO) 1.5 g twice weekly for aluminum bone disease developed fever and bilateral calf pain caused by myonecrosis with gas gangrene. She had a rapidly fatal outcome. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Gastrointestinal
- Gagging
The release of hypoxia related reparative factors by the cells on the collagen-GAG substrate was evaluated to detect if DFO produces results comparable to environmentally induced hypoxia to facilitate optimal clinical settings. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Intestinal Perforation
Despite the frequency of gastrointestinal disease caused by Yersinia enterocolitica, intestinal perforation is a rare complication of this infection and to date only eight cases have been reported in the English literature. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Cardiovascular
- Left Ventricular Dysfunction
Deferoxamine is effective in chelating non-transferrin bound iron and can reverse cardiac arrhythmias and left-ventricular dysfunction, although, combination chelation therapy is usually recommended for patients with cardiac dysfunction. [thalassemia.com]

Jaw & Teeth
- Periodontitis
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of DFO on the proliferation, migration and osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament cells (hPDLCs). [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Musculoskeletal
- Calf Pain
A 49-year-old woman undergoing long-term hemodialysis and treated with deferoxamine (DFO) 1.5 g twice weekly for aluminum bone disease developed fever and bilateral calf pain caused by myonecrosis with gas gangrene. She had a rapidly fatal outcome. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Neurologic
- Intracranial Hemorrhage
Deferoxamine is also used to minimize doxorubicin 's cardiotoxic side effects and in the treatment of a patient with aceruloplasminemia. [9] Deferoxamine maybe effective for improving neurologic outcomes in persons with intracranial hemorrhage, although [en.wikipedia.org]
- Myoclonus
We describe a patient undergoing chronic hemodialysis who developed a neurologic syndrome consisting of seizures, progressive myoclonus, and mild dementia and who responded to chelation therapy with deferoxamine mesylate. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Meningism
The model comprises a co-culture system of cerebral astrocytes and meningeal fibroblasts, which form scar-like clusters when stimulated with transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β). [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Urogenital
- Oliguria
If oliguria or anuria develop, dialysis may be required. References… Bailey, B., Blais, R., Gaudreault, P., Gosselin, S., & Laliberte, M. (2009). Antidotes en toxicologie d'urgence (3rd ed.). Quebec, Canada: Centre antipoison du Quebec. [iwkpoisoncentre.ca]
If oliguria or anuria develop, peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis may become necessary to remove the ferrioxamine. [rxmed.com]
Workup
Serum
- Vitamin C Increased
Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) increases the excretion of iron in the presence of deferoxamine. It is started after the initial month of deferoxamine therapy. [thalassemia.com]
Treatment
Deferoxamine is a chelating agent used in the treatment of transfusional iron overload and more recently in the diagnosis and treatment of increased aluminum body stores in chronic renal failure patients. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Prognosis
The frequent lack of early diagnosis, itself subsequent to a break away from the standard diagnostic tools (apart from biopsy and culture) makes the survival prognosis particularly critical. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Pathophysiology
We hypothesize that this elevation in CSF aluminum may account for the observed neurologic deterioration after deferoxamine and postulate various pathophysiologic mechanisms that might be involved. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Prevention
Both L1 and DF could also prevent iron absorption. The new oral chelator deferasirox (DFX) increases iron excretion and decreases liver iron in TM and TI. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Researchers plan to continue studying patients receiving deferoxamine as treatment for the prevention of heart complications associated with repeated blood transfusions. [clinicaltrials.gov]
