Presentation
We present a case report of cutaneous myiasis in a foreign traveler who was infected by Dermatobia hominis while visiting South America. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Entire Body System
- Inflammation
The inflammation completely disappeared within a short period of time. In patients presenting with cutaneous lesions after return from tropical countries, myiasis has to be considered as a differential diagnosis. [moh-it.pure.elsevier.com]

Lesions are painful, with associated inflammation and regional adenitis. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Falling
The larva burrows under the skin of mammals where it develops for a period of weeks before erupting and falling to the soil to pupate. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
One to three weeks later, mature larvae spontaneously emerge and fall to the ground. Within three days, larvae pupate, then transforming 10 to 20 days later into adults (1). [caribbean.scielo.org]
When mature, they emerge from the host, fall to the ground, and pupate. The adult fly emerges several weeks later. [thetraveldoctor.com.au]

When the mosquito bites someone, the eggs fall off and the warmth of the host causes those eggs to hatch and in a very short time the little grub will burrow in and get snacking. Nice! [davesgonemental.com]
- El Salvador
We report a case of furuncular myiasis in an immigrant from El Salvador with magnetic resonance imaging findings. The case is unique because neuroimaging was obtained upon the clinical suspicion of calvarial osteomyelitis. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
She reported having an insect bite on this area of her leg while in El Salvador. Physical examination revealed a 2-cm violaceous nodule with “pinpoint” central opening and serosanguineous discharge. [aafp.org]
A 54-year-old-Hispanic woman from El Salvador presented with a breast mass. Two years before surgery, the patient had been assaulted with a blow to the right breast, which resulted in a laceration and development of a mass. [archivesofpathology.org]
- Malaise
Methods: the phoretic flies were captured in a village at San Rafael municipality (Antioquia) using Malaise-type traps installed during the months of June to August, 2004. [bdigital.ces.edu.co]
The patient had no fever, malaise, or lymphadenopathy. A 4-mm punch biopsy on the left shin did not reveal any insects. At the 10-day follow-up, the two other lesions were incised and a larva was extracted from each. [aafp.org]
Skin
- Skin Lesion
Parasitic infestation should be included in the differential diagnosis of a new skin lesion in patients who have traveled to endemic areas. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Sign In A 65-year-old man presented with skin lesions on his chest and left arm and shoulder six weeks after returning from a vacation in Belize at the beach and in the rain forest. [nejm.org]
First, with the increase in international travel—in particular, travel for adventure and ecotourism—cutaneous myiasis is becoming a commonly observed skin problem among returning travelers, and it currently accounts for 5%–10% of skin lesions seen at [dx.doi.org]

Histology of the skin showed a moderate chronic dermatitis, with an extensive abscess cavity present deep within the dermis, comprising multiple eosinophils, neutrophils, and multinucleate giant cells centred on part of the organism (fig 2). [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Treatment

Surgery is the main treatment option, and secondary bacterial infection should be kept in mind. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Mechanical extraction is the treatment of choice. [moh-it.pure.elsevier.com]
Prognosis
When the organism is completely excised, the prognosis is good. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Furunculoid myiasis usually has a good prognosis, although tetanus and secondary infection may occur as complications. Frank suppuration is less commonly seen as a possible result of the bacteriostatic activity of the larval gut. [sti.bmj.com]
Etiology
D hominis is a common etiology of cutaneous myiasis endemic to Belize. The larva burrows under the skin of mammals where it develops for a period of weeks before erupting and falling to the soil to pupate. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Epidemiology
Epidemiological, clinical, analytical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and follow-up data were collected from clinical files. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
