Presentation

In the present case, a low-grade diffuse astrocytoma component had colocalized with the epithelioid glioblastoma. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

The most common presenting feature (~40% of cases) is a seizure. This is particularly the case in adults. Headaches are often also present. [radiopaedia.org]

Workup

[…] tumors Other studies EEG may be used to evaluate and monitor epileptiform activity ECG and chest radiographs are indicated to evaluate operative risk CSF studies may be used to rule out other diagnoses (eg, metastasis, lymphoma, medulloblastoma) See Workup [emedicine.com]

Treatment

[…] used in the treatment of these types of tumour. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Surgery is the standard treatment. [braintumor.org]

/ Standard of Care Treatment options depends on the overall health of the person, the type, size, and location of the tumour, if and how far it has spread and previous treatment received. [braintumour.ca]

Prognosis

Prognosis A prognosis is an estimate of the likely progress of a disease after a diagnosis, based on an average patient group. [braintumour.ca]

The prognosis for astrocytoma is pretty different for the different types. [pathologystudent.com]

We have found it difficult and confusing to understand the treatment options and prognosis. We eventually chose radiation therapy (whole brain radiation) and temodar. Radiation is now complete and temodar continues. [csn.cancer.org]

Low-grade astrocytomas (grade I and II) tend to be present in younger patients and have a better prognosis. High-grade astrocytomas (grade III and IV) present in older patients, and the prognosis is dismal. [bestpractice.bmj.com]

Epidemiology

Definition / general 10 - 15% of all astrocytic brain tumors May become more anaplastic over time Three histological variants are recognized: fibrillary, gemistocytic and protoplasmic Terminology Also called diffuse infiltrating astrocytoma Epidemiology [pathologyoutlines.com]

Epidemiology and Demographics Incidence The incidence of astrocytoma is 0.23 per 100,000 and the number of new cases is 700 per year. [1] Diffuse astrocytoma has an incidence of 0.1 per 100,000, with 1500 to 1800 new cases per year in North America. [wikidoc.org]

[…] genomewide data from multiple platforms delineated three molecular classes of lower-grade gliomas that were more concordant with IDH, 1p/19q, and TP53 status than with histologic class. [5, 6, 7] These findings were also reported in a 2013 study. [8] Pathophysiology [emedicine.medscape.com]
