Presentation
We present the case of a thirteen year old male child with a midline cervical mass first noted at one year of age. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Entire Body System
- Soft Tissue Mass
Imaging characteristics of a thyroglossal duct cyst as a simple cyst and of ectopic thyroid tissue as a hyperattenuating soft-tissue mass can help identify these lesions at computed tomography (CT); however, intrinsic magnetic resonance, CT, and ultrasonographic [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
It revealed a well-defined intensely enhancing soft tissue mass lesion in right submandibular space [Figure 3], displacing the submandibular gland anteriorly and extending up to right parotid and parapharyngeal space. [ijri.org]
Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are sometimes nonspecific in distinguishing ectopic thyroid from soft tissue masses or lymph nodes. [ispub.com]
They usually present as soft to firm, nontender mass and may be slow growing or sudden onset ( Burger et al ., 2006 ; Zapater et al ., 2005 ). [scialert.net]

Respiratoric
- Aspiration
A fine-needle aspiration revealed hyperplastic thyroid tissue. A second ecographic-guided fine-needle aspiration confirmed cytologically ectopic thyroid tissue. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
A fine-needle aspiration biopsy did not reveal any evidence of a malignant condition. The diagnosis was an ectopic thyroid gland in a thyroglossal tract. [nejm.org]
- Recurrent Chest Pain
In our patient, a 42-year-old woman with recurrent chest pain, two spheric cardiac tumors were diagnosed by transthoracal echocardiography. One of the tumors, obstructing the LVOT, could successfully be resected under cardiopulmonary bypass. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Psychiatrical
- Suggestibility
Initial evaluation by FNAB suggested ectopic thyroid tissue, which was confirmed later by tissue biopsy and immunostains. This is the first reported case of ectopic thyroid tissue in the lateral chest wall area. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
An omental biopsy showed features suggestive of thyroid follicular epithelial cancer. Serum thyroglobulin was raised at 127 μg/l. She died before the biopsy result was received. [endocrine-abstracts.org]

- Neck Mass
[…] over the two year history of the palpable neck mass. [synapse.koreamed.org]
Thyroid scan, and either CT, or ultrasonography should be performed routinely in cases presenting with a neck mass to avoid unnecessary misdiagnosis. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
- Neck Swelling
Since its early presentation, this midline mass had increased and decreased in size, and over the last three months had been associated with odynophagia and anterior neck swelling. A presumptive diagnosis of thyroglossal duct cyst was made. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Fig.1 Showing midline neck swelling. [indianpediatrics.net]
There was a transverse surgical scar in the neck. Thyroid was not visible or palpable. There was no other swelling in the neck. [ijnm.in]

Workup
We describe the presentation, workup, surgical management, and brief review of the literature. Retroactive review of an 83-year-old white female patient record. As a case report, this project was exempt from institutional review board approval. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Treatment
To evaluate the sensitivity of US in the detection of such ectopias and to describe their US pattern before and during treatment. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Treatment Treatment options for EITC include surgical excision and thyroid hormone suppression. The treatment of choice is surgical excision, predominantly using an endoscopic approach ( 60 ). [academic.oup.com]
Multidisciplinary contributions on medical treatment, radiation oncology, and surgery and anesthesia are included. Highlights include new material on minimally invasive procedures and thoroughly updated diagnostic and treatment information. [books.google.com]
Depending on the position of the tissue, sternotomy or thoracotomy can be performed for surgical treatment. Also, thoracoscopic treatment can also be considered. [casereports.in]
Prognosis
Once a careful histological examination has revealed a follicular adenoma, the prognosis is good especially if successful surgical excision is part of the management. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Prognosis Without treatment thyroid ectopia results in severe intellectual deficit and short stature. The documents contained in this web site are presented for information purposes only. [orpha.net]

Complications and prognosis Mild hyponatraemia is associated with gait disturbance in the elderly and with falls. [patient.info]
No patients with PTC of TGDC reviewed by Patel et al. ( 41 ) exhibited disease-related deaths over a 10-yr period, suggesting that TGDC PTC has an excellent prognosis with appropriate treatment. [academic.oup.com]
Etiology
The etiology is related to the embryological development and maturation of the thyroid gland. It is important to consider metastatic thyroid carcinoma when ectopic thyroid tissue is identified. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Thoroughly revised and extensively expanded, this encyclopedic, highly acclaimed title addresses all aspects of the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, initial treatment and long-term management of all varieties of thyroid cancer. [books.google.com]
Etiology Thyroid ectopia refers to an ectopic location of the thyroid gland. [orpha.net]

Epidemiology
Lateral Neck Ectopic Thyroid Cancer Epidemiology and clinical presentation Precise epidemiological data regarding the incidence and prevalence of lateral neck ectopic thyroid cancer are lacking because it is often extremely difficult to distinguish primary [academic.oup.com]
Summary Epidemiology Prevalence is estimated at about 1/7,000. Thyroid ectopia causes around two-thirds of thyroid dysgenesis and is twice as common in females as in males. [orpha.net]
Gross vs. microscopic True vs. mimickers (metastasis, parasitic nodule, see Differential Diagnosis ) Epidemiology The most frequent form of thyroid dysgenesis, accounting for ~50% of cases ( Endocr Rev 2004;25:722 ) Several hundred cases of ectopic thyroid [pathologyoutlines.com]
Epidemiology Hyponatraemia is the most common electrolyte abnormality encountered in clinical practice. An accurate incidence of mild hyponatraemia managed in the community is impossible, as it is rarely reported. [patient.info]

Prevention
It is important to make sure the pyramidal lobe is removed during thyroidectomy, to prevent recurrence of goitre, Graves' disease or cancer in the remnant. [endocrinesurgery.net.au]
[…] it should not be forgotten that the identification of an agenesis of the isthmus as well as the other thyroid anomalies during the preoperative examination, will make a remarkable contribution in deciding the strategy of the surgery and will help in preventing [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

In order to prevent misdiagnosis and mismanagement, patients with a cervical mass in the anterior midline should be subjected to history screening, physical examination, cervical CDU, RI, thyroid function examinations (TSH, FT 3 and FT 4 ), FNA biopsy [spandidos-publications.com]
