Presentation
A 36-year-old woman presented with headache, multiple cranial nerve palsies, visual hallucinations, confusion, hemiparesis, hemihipoestesia, episodes of disconnection, and toxic syndrome. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Immune System
- Cervical Lymphadenopathy
Metastatic disease was diagnosed based on clinical presentation of a palpable nodule on the right neck and diffuse cervical lymphadenopathies. A biopsy was obtained and pathology revealed anaplastic ependymoma. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
He subsequently developed right upper deep cervical lymphadenopathy and underwent excision biopsy. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of anaplastic ependymoma metastatic to cervical lymph node. [cancerjournal.net]

Other specific symptoms of ependymomas include swelling of the nerve at the back of the eye (papilloedema), rapid, jerky eye movements (nystagmus), neck pain and irritability. [melissasfightingfund.co.uk]

- Recurrent Headache
In June 1998, the patient had recurrent headache and altered equilibrium and an MRI showed a heterogeneous enhancing lesion at the lateral edge of the pons invading the fourth … View Full Text AAN Members: Sign in with your AAN member credentials (e-mail [neurology.org]
Workup
Diagnostic workup included repeated MRI scans, PET with an (18)F-amino acid and (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), as well as a brain biopsy. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
4th ventricle, symptoms are related to obstruction and subsequently increased intracranial pressure In spinal ependymomas, presentation is typically with sensory deficits (compared with astrocytomas, which tend to present with pain and motor symptoms) Workup [en.wikibooks.org]
Ependymoma 12. 12 MRI • MRI is the diagnostic modality of choice in the workup and follow-up observation of intracranial neoplasms, including ependymoma. • MRI exploits the use of increased water content of many neoplasms. [slideshare.net]

Treatment
The treatment relies on surgery and radiotherapy. Upon failure of these treatments, chemotherapy has modest effects. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Prognosis
Treatment and prognosis The treatment and prognosis of ependymomas are not clearly influenced by histological grading 4. Promoted articles (advertising) [radiopaedia.org]
Prognosis A prognosis is an estimate of the likely progress of a disease after a diagnosis, based on an average patient group. [braintumour.ca]
They are usually highly malignant and carry a poor prognosis. The vast majority - approximately 90% - occur in either the frontal, parietal or temporal lobe. [gpnotebook.co.uk]
The aim of this study is the survey of morphology, tumor localisation and patient's age at the moment of diagnosis as relevant factors for the prognosis of these tumors. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
It is important that the prognosis of the disease largely depends on at what age developed the disease. If this happens in childhood, the prognosis is less favorable. Frequent localization of the tumor is the posterior cranial fossa. [back.vsebolezni.com]
Etiology
The etiology of such a co-existence or development of malignancy in a pre-existing RE is yet to be completely understood. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
The third cyst type, dilation of the central canal, is likely reactive in etiology as well, from partial canal obstruction by the tumor. [appliedradiology.com]
What is the etiology, clinic and treatment of this disease? Types and incidence of ependymomas Ependymoma of brain and spinal cord is quite rare. The incidence is 1-2 cases per 1 million people. Children suffer from this disease more adults. [back.vsebolezni.com]
Epidemiology
A retrospective analysis was conducted utilizing the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Program of the United States National Cancer Institute. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Epidemiology/ Localization Incident data vary considerably due to variations in histological criteria for diagnosis, but anaplastic changes appear to be more common in intrancranial ependymomas, particular those in the posterior fossa. [prod.wiki.cns.org]

In adults and adolescents, 75% of ependymomas arise within the spinal canal, with a significant minority occurring intracranially in the supratentorial compartment. [12] Pathophysiology Ependymomas are traditionally thought to arise from oncogenetic events [emedicine.medscape.com]
Prevention
Preventive RT after chemotherapy was given in nine, and salvage RT in 12 children. OS and PFS rates after 3-year were 55.9 and 27.3%, respectively. Twenty-five children relapsed. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Radiation: Ependymomas are very sensitive to radiation so fractionated radiation is usually recommended after surgery to prevent tumor re-growth. Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is occasionally used in the treatment of ependymomas. [ucdenver.edu]
