Foreign Body in the Ureter

Presentation

Herein, we present a case of a foreign body in a ureter, specifically a particle of glue resulting from transarterial embolization of a renal pseudoaneurysm secondary to percutaneous nephrostomy. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]

Case presentation A 53-year-old male presented with the inability to void and bloody urethral discharge after having introduced an electrical wire in his urethra for masturbation 3 hours earlier. [jmedicalcasereports.biomedcentral.com]

We present a case of migrated Hem-o-Lok clips into the ureter following a laparoscopic partial nephrectomy for angiomyolipoma of the left kidney presented with recurrent urinary tract infection. [casereports.bmj.com]

Data is presented as median (interquartile range). [ispub.com]

Clinical presentation usually occur when they encrustate and form stones. [omicsonline.org]

  • Hematuria

The episode was followed by hematuria for four days. Left renal function decreased. X-ray examination revealed dilatation of the left renal pelvis and ureter. X-ray film could not demonstrate any concremet. [jstage.jst.go.jp]

Ureter diseases causing hydronephrosis (intrinsic causes): Ureteral stone Ureteral clot due to hematuria Congenital diseases: ureteropelvic-junction obstruction, vesicoureteral reflux, megaureter, ureterocele. [urology-textbook.com]

At times, hematuria could be massive and uncontrollable, sometimes requiring cystectomy ( Fig.44.10A ). [basicmedicalkey.com]

  • Flank Pain

Endometriosis: recurrent flank pain, dysuria, hematuria Extra-uterine pregnancy Tuboovarial abscess Pelvic floor insufficiency with organ prolapse Tumors: cervical cancer, ovarian cysts, ovarian cancer, uterine leiomyoma ... [urology-textbook.com]

However, several years later the patient presented with flank pain and was diagnosed with an intra-renal embolisation coil and associated stone formation. [ispub.com]

Fifth case was a 36 year old woman who was referred for intermittent left flank pain and her USG was suggestive of Left hydronephrosis and hydroureter up to distal ureter along with an IUCD in bladder which was fixed at vesicouterine junction (VUJ). [omicsonline.org]

Workup

Eighth case had encrusted prolene sutures wandering in the bladder lumen which were found during cystoscopy in diagnostic workup for LUTS in a 62 year old male who had right side herniorrahphy 5 years back. [omicsonline.org]

Typically, they are discovered on routine follow-up cystoscopy for papillary urothelial neoplasms and very frequently in the workup for microhematuria or urinary obstructive symptoms. [basicmedicalkey.com]

Treatment

The initial treatment will usually consist of placing a bladder catheter for drainage, and treatment of the obstructing disease after the situation has stabilized. [uihc.org]

Treatment helps to prevent complications of ureteral injuries. If complications occur despite efforts to prevent them, they must be treated. NOTE: This is the Consumer Version. [msdmanuals.com]

To prevent encrustation, dilution of the urine with high fluid intake and aggressive treatment of any urinary tract infection should be undertaken. [bsir.org]

Prognosis

Prognosis [ 2 ] Most symptomatic renal stones are small (less than 5 mm in diameter) and pass spontaneously. Stones less than 5 mm in diameter pass spontaneously in up to 80% of people. [patient.info]

Studies are needed to determine how prevalent a minor component must be in order to have an impact on prognosis. [basicmedicalkey.com]

Etiology
