Presentation
Sir, Mizuo phenomenon has been rarely reported in juvenile X-linked retinoschisis (XLR). 1 We report a case of XLR with peripheral Mizuo phenomenon 2 which presented as isolated foveal schisis. [nature.com]
Case presentation We present a case of a 17-year-old caucasian male with foveal and peripheral schisis, along with Mizuo-Nakamura phenomenon. RS1 sequencing led to the discovery of an in-frame deletion not previously described in the literature. [bmcmedgenet.biomedcentral.com]
However, disease is commonly presented with reading difficulties due to the foveoschisis in school-age children, it can be diagnosed with nystagmus or strabismus in infancy. [ijo.in]
X-linked retinoschisis may also present as spontaneous vitreous hemorrhage or retinal detachment. [eyewiki.aao.org]

- Retinal Pigmentation
Figure 4: SD-OCT of the right macula shows significant atrophy of the retina with loss of the outer retinal layer architecture, but no retinal schisis. There is pigment clumping and irregular retinal pigment epithelium. [westcoastretina.com]
The broad area of flat central tissue on OCT suggests that fovealschisis may collapse with subsequent alterations of the retinal pigment epitheliumand overlying retina. [jamanetwork.com]
The diagnosis may be difficult because of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and choroidal atrophy. Biomicroscopic diagnosis of MH in highly myopic eyes without retinal detachment is sometimes difficult. [touchophthalmology.com]

Congenital x-linked retinoschisis is typically diagnosed in males between the ages of 3 months and school age with symptoms that include crossed eyes (strabismus), abnormal eye movements (nystagmus) and “lazy eye” (amblyopia). [retinalmd.com]
Patients typically present complaining of difficulty in school, although younger patients may present earlier with strabismus or nystagmus. Visual acuity may range from 20/20 to blindness, and depends on the amount and area of schisis. [eyewiki.aao.org]
The disorder is also associated with axial hyperopia, posterior subcapsular cataract and strabismus. Fluorescein angiography shows minimal or no leakage as opposed to cystoid macular edema. [disorders.eyes.arizona.edu]
- Visual Impairment
X-linked juvenile retinoschisis is a rare hereditary retinal disease characterized by a tangential splitting of the neurosensory retina which may cause early-onset visual impairment. [ncbi.nlm.nih.gov]
Visual impairment in patients with macular retinoschisis may be variable. [onlinelibrary.wiley.com]
The presence of blood in the vitreous body causes further visual impairment. The vitreous body degenerates and may eventually separate from the retina. The entire retina may also separate from underlying tissue layers causing retinal detachments. [retinaaustralia.com.au]
Methods We reviewed the records of 14 consecutive patients (53–77 years of age; 16 eyes) with progressive visual impairment as a result of myopic RS or FD. [link.springer.com]
- Night Blindness
Neither patient had a family history of low vision, night blindness, or retinal detachment. Visual acuity in the affected eyes was 20/50 and 20/25, respectively. Both fellow eyes had normal fundi, except for mild myopic changes. [moh-it.pure.elsevier.com]
Presentation - poor night vision as a result in a delay or an inability to achieve normal dark-adapted rod thresholds. Patients have night blindness, reduced acuity, high myopia, nystagmus and strabismus. [patient.info]
However, a similar ERG pattern can be seen in other hereditary and acquired retinal disorders, notably, congenital stationary night blindness. [institut-vision.org]

- Nystagmus
However, disease is commonly presented with reading difficulties due to the foveoschisis in school-age children, it can be diagnosed with nystagmus or strabismus in infancy. [ijo.in]
Patients typically present complaining of difficulty in school, although younger patients may present earlier with strabismus or nystagmus. Visual acuity may range from 20/20 to blindness, and depends on the amount and area of schisis. [eyewiki.aao.org]
Other symptoms include night blindness, an inability of both eyes to focus on an object (strabismus) and roving, involuntary eye movements (nystagmus). In about half of the cases, peripheral (side) vision is also affected. [ieek1eoawdvdq7e.changeip.net]
Juvenile retinoschisis is a congenital X-linked recessive retinal disorder.Patients may develop nystagmus, decreased central vision, or strabismus. [jamanetwork.com]
Patients have night blindness, reduced acuity, high myopia, nystagmus and strabismus. There are two major types - the complete form and the incomplete form. [patient.info]

Epidemiology
Epidemiology, onset & clinical features Epidemiology Degenerative retinoschisis affects about 5-7% of the adult population. Occurrence in up to 22% of individuals older than 40 years has been reported. Both genders are equally affected. [institut-vision.org]
Epidemiology Reported prevalence of disease varies widely due to population-based RS studies, difficulty of observing lesions due to its peripheral location, and the fact that most patients are asymptomatic. [eyerounds.org]
Epidemiology of high myopia and myopic retinopathy There have been no epidemiological studies specifically evaluating the prevalence of MF. [nature.com]
